Acclaimed master filmmaker Martin Scorsese has been developing his passion project Silence for nearly a staggering three decades now. So when you read that headline above, then I’m sure that one word immediately jumps to forefront in your thoughts: Finally! However, after watching the trailer, I’m pretty that’s going to be replaced by a different word: Amazing! These may also be accompanied by high pitched squeals of delight and sploosh noises as you look at the gorgeous cinematography.

Silence is an adaptation of the “based on a true story” novel by Shusaku Endo by Scorsese and his Gangs of New York collaborator Jay Cocks, and it follows two 17th Century Jesuit priests (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who face torture and persecution when they travel to feudal Japan to track down their wayward mentor (Liam Neeson) while also trying to spread Christianity among the locals. And it looks like it could get heavy. Faith has always featured abundantly in Scorsese’s works, but never to this intense degree (especially if you know all the insane torture that laid ahead for these priests).

Check it out below:

Despite the fact that we’re only seeing the first trailer for Silence now, it’s actually releasing in limited fashion in just a month on December 23. Talk about leaving it to the very last minute. The religious drama also stars Ciaran Hinds, Shinya Tsukamoto, and Issey Ogata.
