Monday Box Office Report – MOANA washes away the competition

MOANA

It appears that on Thanksgiving weekend, Disney had a lot to be thankful for. Their latest animated effort Moana opened this weekend past and made one gigantic splash. With the Thanksgiving holiday giving the US a five-day weekend, Moana took advantage of these extra days to pull in $81.1 million. That’s actually enough to edge out Toy Story 2 and give it the second largest five-day Thanksgiving weekend opening ever (Disney now holds nine out of the ten top spots on that particular list). Over three days, Moana brought in $55.5 million which is still a very good opening.

And speaking of animals that bring people joy, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them kept up its strong box office run. It may have lost the top spot to Moana, but the Harry Potter prequel still magicked up a fair bit of cash for itself. On its second week on the US chart, the fantasy film brought in an impressive $65.57 million over the five-day weekend, and $45 million over three days. And that great run continued abroad as Fantastic Beasts pulled in an additional $132 million internationally. The largest slice of that came from a very strong $41 million opening in China, the biggest of the entire Harry Potter franchise in the Asian market. This opening alone actually surpassed the lifetime proceeds of the entire franchise except Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

And in holdover news, while Doctor Strange’s $18.85 million take from the weekend was nothing special, it did move the latest Marvel movie pass the $600 million milestone in just 4 weeks. It’s now also surpassed Iron Man to become the biggest solo-hero debut ever for the comic book movie studio, with Doctor Strange currently sitting on $616 million globally.

Unfortunately, that’s pretty much the last time the entries on this box office report have anything to truly be thankful for. Director Robert Zemeckis’ Allied has two massive movie stars in Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard leading it, but its been receiving some soft reviews. And its box office fortunes have followed suit as the film opened to a tepid $18 million over five days. Put that into the perspective of a normal three-day weekend, and it looks pretty dismal. It appears that Allied is going to have to rely on some serious generosity in the international markets to see it balance out its $85 million price tag.

"Bad Santa 2"

But it gets worse, as Bad Santa 2 – a sequel that I’m not sure was on anybody’s Christmas wish list – had to scrabble around to just make $9 million over five days, and just $6.1 million in the traditional weekend space. The Billy Bob Thornton led comedy has also not been getting good word of mouth, which means that it would need a bona fide Christmas miracle to even break even with its relatively low $26 million production budget.

And just when you think you’ve seen the lowest of the lows, along comes Warren Beatty’s Rules Don’t Apply. Despite a potent ensemble cast including Annette Bening, Matthew Broderick, Lily Collins and Alden Ehrenreich, and the drawcard of this being Beatty’s first onscreen appearance in 15 years, I think it’s safe to say that it is actually the biggest turkey this Thanksgiving. Opening in 2382 cinemas in the US, the romantic drama could not even make the top 10, as it only managed to eke out a miserly $2.17 million over five days. That gives it one of worst wide domestic openings in history! One made even more disastrous if you had to measure it with just its three day total of $1.57 million!

Here is what’s happening on the rest of the US chart (measured with the traditional three-day total so as to make for a more accurate comparison):
