I’m still not entirely sure what to make of the fact that we’re getting a live-action drama reboot of classic comic book Archie being made by The CW. I’ve been writing out those words for more than a year now, and they still don’t quite make sense to me when viewed next to each other. But Riverdale – as this reboot is called, with a tip of the hat to Smallville – is indeed happening.

We’ve read character descriptions, seen some pics and even heard of the feedback when the pilot screened at Comic-Con earlier in the year, but we’ve never got to see Riverdale in action for ourselves. Until now. The first teaser trailer has popped up online (courtesy of EW) and it shows off a buff Archie getting caught up in some sombre murder mystery and high school politics involving a whole lot of good looking people – all of which appears to line up with producers’ previous description of it as a “teenage Twin Peaks“.

Read the very detailed synopsis (Wait… Archie was knocking boots with his teacher?!) and check out the teaser trailer below!

As a new school year begins, the town of Riverdale is reeling from the recent, tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom — and nothing feels the same… Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music — not follow in his dad’s footsteps—despite the sudden end of his forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel). Which means Archie doesn’t have anyone who will mentor him — certainly not singer Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), who is only focused on her band, the soon-to-be-world-famous Pussycats. It’s all weighing heavily on Archie’s mind — as is his fractured friendship with budding writer and fellow classmate Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse).

Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush Archie after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Betty’s nerves – which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother Alice (Mädchen Amick) aren’t the only thing holding her back. When a new student, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), arrives in town from New York with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols), there’s an undeniable spark between her and Archie, even though Veronica doesn’t want to risk her new friendship with Betty by making a play for Archie.

And then there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch)… Riverdale’s Queen Bee is happy to stir up trouble amongst Archie, Betty, and Veronica, but Cheryl is keeping secrets of her own. What, exactly, is she hiding about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason? Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there are dangers in the shadows…

Well, now. That looks absolutely nothing like anything Archie related that I’ve ever seen. This could perhaps turn out be decent – some early reviews were very positive, granted you could buy into the heavily dramatic tone – or it could be just another pretty people CW filler.

Riverdale is produced by Greg Berlanti, the man behind all the CW’s DC Comics superhero shows (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) and the pilot episode was written by Archie Comics’ chief creative officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Riverdale premieres in the US on 26 January 2017.

Wow this trailer is as much Archie as the trailer for Star Wars was for Alien.

Wow. I honestly thought I couldn’t care a less until I watched the trailer. Now I care even less than I did before.

Not much to go on, but nothing Archie-like. They could used Joe Soap in Soapville. It’s just another teen drama thing branded to be Archie and the gang.

They better have an episode about Jughead’s burger addiction and intervention.

Do any of those ‘people’ look like they eat burgers? No way. Those are latte sipping, grass eating pretty boys.
