Stephen King Movies in Order: Release-Order Watch Guide

Comments Off on Stephen King Movies in Order: Release-Order Watch Guide

To watch Stephen King movies in order, start with Carrie (1976) and work through their release years. Most are standalone stories, so you can also jump straight to a film that interests you. The two essential connected pairs are The Shining before Doctor Sleep, and It before It Chapter Two.

The bigger surprise is the variety. A King marathon can take you from a haunted hotel to a prison friendship, then into a coming-of-age adventure without a monster in sight. Choosing the right starting point matters more than learning an enormous fictional timeline.

Below is a release checklist, followed by shorter watch routes, remake comparisons and answers to the questions that tend to complicate these lists. Plot descriptions avoid major spoilers.

Stephen King movies in release order

This checklist covers English-language feature films directly adapting King’s fiction, plus films with original King screenplays. It includes cinema, streaming and direct-to-video releases. Anthologies qualify when they contain a King story or screenplay; that does not make every segment his work.

Years follow the first public release rather than festival premieres. Titles released in the same year are grouped together. TV movies, miniseries, shorts and franchise sequels with new stories sit outside this main checklist. The starting reference is Stephen King’s official film catalogue, cross-checked against distributor information where dates differ. Checked 6 November 2026.

Children of the Corn had limited Florida screenings in 2020; its broader theatrical release began in March 2023. The Life of Chuck premiered at a festival in 2024, but NEON identifies its commercial release as 2025.

Also, Mercy belongs in 2014: Universal’s film page confirms that release year. An older development date can make it appear earlier in some lists.

Which Stephen King movie should you watch first?

For a first visit, pick a mood rather than committing to every release. These are editorial suggestions, not a ranking based on review scores.

Your mood Start here Why it works
Classic supernatural horror Carrie (1976) A direct, emotionally charged introduction.
Slow-building dread The Shining (1980) Atmosphere takes centre stage.
A tense thriller Misery (1990) The danger comes from a human being.
Friendship and nostalgia Stand by Me (1986) A small story with a lasting emotional pull.
An absorbing drama The Shawshank Redemption (1994) Character and hope drive the film.
Modern creature horror It (2017) A group of friends gives the scares their stakes.
Something gentler in tone The Life of Chuck (2025) A reflective alternative to the horror selections.

For a manageable five-film introduction, try Carrie, Stand by Me, Misery, The Shawshank Redemption and It. That selection shows how different King adaptations can feel. Add The Shining when you want a slower, more unsettling evening.

The connected films that need a watch order

The Shining and Doctor Sleep

Watch The Shining (1980), then Doctor Sleep (2019). The second film follows Danny Torrance as an adult, so the earlier film supplies both emotional context and familiar imagery. King’s official Doctor Sleep synopsis explicitly identifies it as a continuation of Danny’s story.

The 1997 television adaptation of The Shining is an alternative version of the first story. It is not an extra chapter between the two cinema films.

It and It Chapter Two

Watch It (2017), then It Chapter Two (2019). The films divide the story between the Losers’ childhood and their adult return. Starting with the second film gives away developments and weakens the reunion.

The 1990 It miniseries tells its own version of the story. You do not need it before the newer films. Likewise, It: Welcome to Derry is television viewing for anyone who wants to explore further, rather than a required first step in this movie marathon.

The Dark Tower

The 2017 film is a single feature, not the start of a released multi-film sequence. References across King’s fiction can be rewarding, but watching every adaptation first is unnecessary. There is no screen-wide chronological order that turns all these separate productions into one continuous story.

Remakes, sequels and titles that confuse the list

Remakes offer different interpretations. They do not normally continue the earlier film’s plot.

Story Feature-film versions in this guide How to approach them
Carrie 1976; 2013 Start with 1976, then compare performances and choices.
Firestarter 1984; 2022 Either stands alone; release order makes comparison easy.
Pet Sematary 1989; 2019 Treat them as separate adaptations.
The Running Man 1987; 2025 Two distinct screen interpretations of the novel.
Children of the Corn 1984; 2020/2023 reimagining Distinguish the adaptations from the many franchise sequels.

Pet Sematary Two (1992), The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999) and Pet Sematary: Bloodlines (2023) are examples of related franchise films outside this direct-adaptation checklist. Their existence is one reason different websites give different totals.

The Lawnmower Man (1992) is another edge case. Its disputed connection to King’s story and the objections to using his name are documented by the American Film Institute; it is excluded here rather than presented as a straightforward adaptation.

Even a familiar title can conceal a different source story. Stand by Me adapts The Body, while Hearts in Atlantis primarily draws on Low Men in Yellow Coats. Our earlier explanation of Hearts in Atlantis unpacks that particular naming puzzle.

Frequently asked questions

What was the first Stephen King movie?

Carrie (1976), directed by Brian De Palma, was the first feature-film adaptation of a Stephen King novel. It is the starting point for a release-order watchthrough.

Are all Stephen King movies connected?

No. Most tell independent stories. Shared names, locations and references do not mean the films share a consistent timeline. Follow the explicit sequels in order and approach the remaining films individually.

Where do The Stand and Salem’s Lot fit?

The Stand adaptations from 1994 and 2020 are miniseries, so they are outside the movie table. Salem’s Lot has television adaptations from 1979 and 2004, plus the 2024 feature included above. Check the year and format when choosing a version.

Did Stephen King write The Running Man?

Yes. He published the source novel under his Richard Bachman pen name. The 1987 and 2025 movies are separate adaptations, not consecutive chapters.

Which Stephen King films are not horror?

Stand by Me and The Shawshank Redemption are good starting points. The Green Mile adds supernatural elements to prison drama, while The Life of Chuck offers a reflective fantasy drama. Serious themes remain, so a non-horror label does not make a film children’s viewing.

Where can I watch these movies?

Availability changes by country and service. Search the exact title and year in your local streaming catalogue or rental store, especially for Carrie, Firestarter and Pet Sematary. That small check helps avoid renting a remake when you meant to watch the original.
