In an interview with Oculus VR chief executive Brendan Iribe, it’s been revealed that id’s John Carmack, who recently became Oculus VR’s Chief Technology Officer, is focusing on getting the Oculus Rift on mobile devices.
“He’s been spearheading a lot of the mobile effort, working with a group of talented engineers on that. He largely works out of the Dallas office. Most of the engineers, though, are in Irvine here, working remotely with John. There’s a handful of other developers in Dallas that John is working with.”
He mentioned that the Oculus VR team was trying to respect Carmack’s working style, which involves problem solving and intense concentration. Iribe stated that they have their strategy focused on developing for mobile and PC, but Carmack is heading the development of mobile.
“We have a few partners we’ve been working closely with. We have our strategy focused on the PC and mobile. In our vision, that’s where VR needs to be. It’s going to be an exciting time. All we hope is that, much like Valve-What we all hope is that the VR of the future is really good. What we don’t want to see is bad experiences. We want comfortable breakthrough experiences.”
I don’t think Oculus on mobile will be the best idea. All I imagine is people using them on the bus, or walking home and just falling down a manhole or in the path of a moving hover car. Nonetheless I’m really excited for the consumer release of the Rift for any platform they want to release it on. It’s been available to developers since March this year. With Carmack on the team, I imagine whatever they come up with may very well change how we play games forever.

I really want this to work. Love the idea of being able to experience horror in a 3D world. Imagine Dead Space!

Well, did you watch it and if so, did you regret it? The only regret I have about this video is now I wish that they could just finish the research on it and release it to the public… I could really use the Wingman App 😛

I love this video… The best part is that there are already a lot of people doing research into this to monitor health status and so on. As long as I can give mine a classic Half-Life look, then I will be so happy!

have you seen the Black Mirror version of this? Where they are able to record everything they see and recall it at any moment?

Nope, but that is fucking scary, especially if you fap infront of a mirror… uh… Not that I do that of course 😀

Rift is so cool. At the very least it would make playing Amnesia easier as you can hook it up and play on the loo. Will make spontaneous krapping much easier and manageable

I have a transparent Rift-type device I use in conjunction with my phone. It’s called “a pair of glasses.”
John Van Rensburg
December 17, 2013 at 10:22
its not too different in idea to google glass (only a lot more graphically intensive). I know that the next iteration of google glass will take the form of a contact lens (similar to mission impossible – ghost protocol), in about 5-10 years. so the occulus rift on mobile isn’t too difficult to imagine.

Why the hell would you be walking around with the rift on anyway? Might as well be stupid and walk around blind folded
