As most of you know by now, I have no problem with women showing off how pretty/sexy they are if that’s what they want to do. I have no issue if those women also happen to be gamers. However, this new Gamer Girl magazine is a bit over the top for my liking.
Cred magazine has launched their latest online mag, Gamer Girl. As a general rule, the Cred magazines seem to follow an FHM/Maxim approach – show tons of pretty ladies in tiny outfits in order to make a sale. You can download the mag, or grab it in print. So, what is the magazine all about?
GG features female video game models and Cosplay girls.
This issue features cover girl Kristy Ann along with Lady Sage, Chyna Doll, Anise Tai and Melissa. Each of the models demonstrates one of five gaming essentials.
Okay, so they are models pretending to be gamers. Sure, in the end they’re just models and I have no problem with how they decide they want to earn their rent money. However, this plays into just about every gamer stereotype. Their stats are listed, including sex drive. Um, really? Maybe I should add that next to my gamer tag.
I’m sure it’s all just a bid to make money by selling sexy lady images. While that’s all well and fine, I’m not sure why they need to market this at gamers in particular. Perhaps we should be flattered and take it as a sign that gaming has “grown up” and is a known market to have plenty of expendable income. However, I can’t help but feel a little disappointed – I’d love a magazine filled with hot gamer geeks. You know, one with actual gamers instead of models. But then, I still believe the brain is the biggest sex organ, although that Kristy Ann might give you a run for your money.
What do you guys think, do you like the idea or is it kind of offensive towards gamers? Also, are you still even reading words, or did you stop at the gallery?

Do you know how to tell the fake gamer girls from the real ones? Gamers (male and female), when they’re holding the controller, their index and middle fingers will always rest on the shoulder and trigger buttons respectively. The girl holding the Vita is doing it all wrong…..This isn’t Snes!!!

May 15, 2014 at 14:47
My point is, this very website and its community perpetuate the stereotype of gamers enjoying scantily clad women. There’s nothing wrong with that (at least not to me, others may disagree). But it’s definitely not shocking that a magazine of this nature would be marketed at gamers. In fact, it’s clever.

the ION is chock full of actual gaming, geek and other news (hence In Other News). Yes, it generally has pictures of sexy women. It has also had pictures of men, cows, and horrifying mankinis. It’s an opportunity for us to let loose, while still adding valuable content to the site. This magazine doesn’t offer anything gaming related, unless you consider the word association game relevant. 😛
RinceBroken
May 15, 2014 at 15:35

RinceBroken
May 15, 2014 at 14:53
Not really. If you have seen the community’s response to sexism, feminism, both babes and the like you would know that people do’;t come here for one article in the afternoon that has a picture of a woman (OR MAN in some cases). 99.9% of the comments are centred around either the community of people who know each other, or about games or the realm of games. The idea of people liking scantily clad women is by no means restricted to gamers at all, and indeed is a perpetuated BAD stereotype of some geek with spots sitting in front of his computer, a stereotype that the community resents. Most of the people on this site are married and their wives also peruse, you think that will be the same with this new site? I think not. It is using a childish mechanism to attract 10 year old boys, and won’t be taken seriously by most people. (edit for some typos, sorry:)
FSR
May 15, 2014 at 14:58
Sigh, I’m not trying to argue, I have an opinion, I have expressed it, you disagree, and that’s fine. Saying you’re against sexism in gaming and supporting even the notion of half naked ladies on “one article a day” is a contradiction. You are partaking in the objectification of women and sanctioning it. How is this any different?
RinceBroken
May 15, 2014 at 15:03
I suppose it’s a matter of degree. When your sole reason is blatantly making money using sex, then yes, I disagree. When it’s one picture of a women (or man as I said) then I don’t. Liking a scantily clad person is natural, the reasons for using one is what I question. LG makes no money from that ION image. People come here for the articles on games. Anywho, as you said, differing opinions and as a journalist I certainly will not tell you you are wrong 🙂
