Genres might fall out of favour, but they never really die. They just ride off into the sunset, maybe to return one day (“Shane! Come back!”) – and so it is with the humble Western. Forsaken is the upcoming R-rated Western redemption tale starring Kiefer and Donald Sutherland. It also marks the first time the father-son duo will appear on-screen together as father and son.
The official plot synopsis is as follows:
John Henry [Kiefer Sutherland] returns to his hometown in hopes of repairing his relationship with his estranged father, but a local gang is terrorizing the town. John Henry is the only one who can stop them, however he has abandoned both his gun and reputation as a fearless quick-draw killer.
Let’s be perfectly blunt: we’ve all seen this story before, in every genre, and all the major story beats are pretty predictable. But. Taking a look at that very impressive star-studded cast I think this could be one of those movies where it’s not what they’re saying, but how they say it. As a Western fan it’s definitely one I’ll check out as I’m getting a rather Unforgiven vibe from it, how about you?
Forsaken releases in the US on 19 February, no local date as yet. Directed by Jon Cassar (24) with the script by Brad Mirman (The Confession), it stars Donald Sutherland, Kiefer Sutherland, Demi Moore, Brian Cox and Michael Wincott.
