A week after the first footage from Jack Reacher: Never Go Back dropped (featuring the dulcet tones of a Cobie Smulders voice-over) the first official trailer is here. It’s one I’ve been waiting impatiently to see because as a fan of the first Reacher outing, I was a bit disappointed by what we were first shown.
The official plot synopsis (it finally has one) is as follows:
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back follows the title character as he returns to Virginia to meet the head of his former unit. But she’s missing, he’s being charged with a crime committed nearly 20 years ago, and he may even have a daughter. Making things right will lead him on a cross-country chase to uncover the truth – and maybe even a family.
I’m on the fence after watching this trailer. The action looks top-notch, but the effortless “cool” that Reacher possessed in the original comes across more forced this time around.
I’ve also never been a fan of movies, or more specifically the story told in the movie, where the renegade outsider takes on a massive conspiracy because they almost always have gigantic plot holes and crazy coincidences that always seem like a bit of a… reach – and this seems like it could be the case here.
I still want to watch this though because it’s got Tom Cruise doing what he does so well, and he does look to be in fine form here, and it’s sure to be entertaining to watch – just with some lowered expectations for the plot.
What do you think about the trailer, am I being a cynical old git and we should we just sit back and watch Tom Cruise punch his way to truth, freedom and justice?
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is due for release in the US on 21 October. Directed by Edward Zwick, it stars Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders, Robert Knepper, Aldis Hodge, Holt McCallany and Patrick Heusinger.

Found the first Jack Reacher to be enjoyable, but not Cinema Quality (watched on MonoChoice). This looks like the same to me

I’m worried that with this one they’re trying to go “bigger” on everything and end up diluting it, because that what it looks like.

I’m a big fan of the books, so let me start there – in the books Jack Reacher is a bit of a larger than life character, but it works for the books in the way the books are written. In terms of the movies, I’m still not convinced that Tom Cruise is quite nailing it based on the way the Character is portrayed in the books.
