Infinity Ward tweeted this cryptic tweet and image over the weekend which got the world scrambling to figure out what on earth this is and why does Infinity Ward have it?
What’s this? (phone for scale reference)
— Infinity Ward (@InfinityWard) March 2, 2013
The first guesses are Valve’s Steam Box, which we’ve seen before with the code name Piston
While it’s obviously pretty identical it does raise the question of why? Why would you need a dev kit of what is supposed to simply be a PC in a box, doesn’t that defeat the point?
So what do you think? Just a nice corporate gift from Valve or is their Steam Box going to be more like a console than we originally thought?
Oh and yes surely that is the hard drive under it.

It’s a doubled edged sword poking at consoles too.

But the reality is if you want to play most current non indie titles and most future titles, you still need Windows

Whatever that is I have a feeling the steam ‘box’ is going to go the same path as Google+. Most pc gamers wont buy at as they are probably content with steam on their pc and most console fanboys will stick to ps4/720. It will probably have a small but dedicated fanbase.
Depending on the price and reviews i might get one though.

I don’t know.
I have a bunch of games (on steam), I would like play on my TV.
As I am to lazy move PC to my TV every time.
I might just buy this, if the price is right.

Just run a HDMI cable to your TV from your PC or get a wireless ‘hdmi’ card.

All they need to do to insert some dominance and gain an install base is get a quality FPS from the dudes who made COD4, Portal 3 and the trilogy Half life pack.
If they dont then they are doomed and stupid.

Steam games are cheap, and if Steam Box is cheap, MS and Sony can move aside.

They are setting up next cod to (also) run on ubuntu, with the steam box being the template for the hardware specs.

The “Piston” isn’t the “Steam Box”. Get it right.
