Big Star Wars fan? Here’s how you can build your own BB-8 droid!

STAR WARS! I’m a teeny bit amped for the upcoming movie, The Force Awakens. Heck, I don’t even care if it doesn’t live up to all the hype, I’m just happy that I’ll get to see that universe on-screen once more. If you’re a fan, you’ve no doubt watched both teaser trailers already. Got a soft spot for R2D2? You’re probably already in love with the new BB-8 droid (I sure am). Why wait to see the little fella on screen, when you can have your very own in real life?

All it will take is some DIY knowhow (ok maybe a lot). Check out what this Industrial Designer, Christian Poulsen, has put together (via Polygon):

It’s not an exact replica of the one seen in the trailers, nor does it run as smoothly. I still think it’s awesome though!

If you’re interested, here’s a step-by-step guide on how you yourself can make a BB-8 Droid – assuming you have access to the tools, time and DIY skills necessary. It took Poulsen less than 24 hours to put it together:

Part of what I really enjoyed about the process of making it was the timeline. Most projects I work on end up taking weeks, if not months to finish. With BB-8, I pushed myself to make it in a day.

As a result, the surfacing and paint is less than perfect, which I’m serendipitously calling “weathered”. But I was able to stick to my goal, and was able to make the whole thing in a matter of hours. I wanted to capture the character and personality of the real robot as simply as possible, and I’m really happy with how it turned out.

It will probably take the average person a lot longer to make, though extra effort could be put in to make it a much neater job than the one above. I myself have the DIY know-how of a dead insect, so I won’t be attempting this anytime soon. What I can do however, is put a friend of mine onto it – he just happens to be an Industrial Designer. BRB throwing money at his face.

Awesome! I love the fact that it isn’t Jar-Jard, thank the maker.

I for one liked Episode ONE… But fair enough to my defense I was 13 when it came out.
