MassEffect

I wasn’t expecting it, but it seems that EA wanted to impress right out of the gate, starting off with a CGI teaser from the newest game in the Mass Effect universe: Mass Effect Andromeda.

EA’s Andrew Wilson then took the stage to talk about EA’s show, promising an action-packed show. That, tiny little teaser was really all of Mass Effect that we got to see though. Andromeda is coming in 2016.

According to an earlier rumour, it’s “Set in the Helius Cluster of the Andromeda Galaxy, removed by time and space from the Mass Effect “Commander Shepard” trilogy and its ending. Play as a “Pathfinder” explorer leading expedition with the aim of establishing new home for humanity. Encounter “savage untamed lands”, “cut-throat outlaws”, and “warring alien races” in an effort to survive and colonies. Andromeda is home to a mysterious alien race, the Remnants, who’ve left their vaults and ancient technology throughout.”

I love Mass Effect, and I cannot wait for this. I squeeled like a schoolgirl at a boyband concert when I realised the trailer was for the new Mass Effect.

I’m sure this will have some kind of plausible explanation we’ll find out about later, but I do, however, have to wonder why they’ve chosen Andromeda as a setting. Do you know how mind bogglingly FAR away that is? It’s 2.5 MILLION light years from here! 0_o

Our own galaxy has over 400 billion star systems, and we’re finding potential earth-like planets fairly regularly at current tech levels, never mind what’s available in existing Mass Effect lore. It’s easy to imagine that we manage to really trash the planet & need to find a new digs a some point, but there are much more accessible options than frakking Andromeda. You’re presumably going to have to terraform planets chosen for colonies in Andromeda anyway, so why the hell don’t you just terraform something a lot closer to home? If you’ve got the tech to get to another *galaxy* in a practical timeframe, you’ve definitely got the tech to easily move around our own little galaxy to find a new place to stay.

Eh, whatever, it’s Mass Effect, I’m all kinds of excited, and one does have to consider suspension of disbelief & all that I suppose :p

After ME3’s ending, there’d be no way for them to continue any story set in the Milky Way without major retcons. A prequel may have allowed them to still use this galaxy but with humanity’s time among the galactic community only being +-30 years, the existing lore would have made any ending a forgone conclusion. Andromeda provides a clean slate.

      Theory time:

I reckon the Pathfinder story revolves around a fleet that was prepared to leave the Milky Way during the Reaper invasion regardless of the war’s outcome; maybe a last-ditch effort sanctioned by the Council in secret. I also think the fact that it is set so long after the original trilogy is that with no Mass Relays linking the Milky Way and Andromeda (that we know of), FTL travel would be the only way to get there. This may explain why the discussion between the old man and the child about “the Shepard” at the end of ME3 seems to be from the distant future.

Still hyped though, can’t wait for it.
