Now, I’m not much of a gambling man…Actually that’s a complete lie, as I may owe some money to some bad people judging by the fact that my right hand is a mangled maw of broken bones and ligaments right now. I know that feeling guys. I know how it can crush your soul to be up thousands and then to lose it all, which might be proof that I’m a terrible gambler if I owe money to mobs just by playing a digital version of the game on my iPad. But at least I’m not as bad as Mark Wahlberg is.
Jim Bennett is a risk taker. Both an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster and offers his own life as collateral. Always one step ahead, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank, a loan shark with a paternal interest in Bennett’s future. As his relationship with a student deepens, Bennett must take the ultimate risk for a second chance…
I’m digging the vibe so far, as it feels like a modern day Casino with some damn good actors involved. Plus using the Rolling Stones in your trailer is always a good move in my book. The Gambler bets it all on black December 19, and also stars Jessica Lange, John Goodman, and Michael K. Williams. Rupert “Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes” Wyatt directs.
