AQUAMAN is “the Wolverine” of the Justice League says director James Wan

Aquaman is the biggest badass around, saddled with the worst reputation in comic book history. It doesn’t help that the second anyone hears his name, they flashback to a Super Friends episode where he was about as useful as trying to stop a hurricane with a fart thanks to his crippling weakness of not being wet enough. Also, I’m looking at you Robot Chicken.

For decades now, DC has been trying to remind their fans that Aquaman is not to be messed with. The 1990s gave us a one-handed avenger of the oceans, later stories would reinvent the hero as a mystic adventurer of more than just oceans and the New 52 would reboot yet again with an Aquaman who summoned nightmares from the deep to fight back the forces of Apokolips.

And yet it still isn’t enough, is it? The upcoming Justice League and Aquaman films however, wants to remind people just how much of a badass the king of the seas really is. After all, any man who can survive the crushing depths of the ocean and thrive within those waters is not to be messed with. Or as director James Wan described him, Aquaman is DC’s answer to a certain hairy Canadian who is prone to berserker rages.

“Immediately, the whole joke aspect of Aquaman goes out the window,” Wan said regarding the casting of Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry aka Aquaman to IGN.

You have such a muscular, superhero-y character and one that is almost, to me, in some ways… I look at him, he’s kind of the Wolverine in some respect. He’s the outsider who gets pulled into this world and he kind of doesn’t want to belong and he was doing his own thing. And he prided freedom above everything else. That kind of plays nicely into who his character is. He’s like a reluctant superhero, right? He’s the reluctant king, basically, or would-be king.

We’ve already seen a glimpse of Aquaman in Batman V Superman, before he pops up in Zack Snyder’s Justice League movies. While Snyder will help define the character further (possibly as a badass whiskey-drinkin’ denizen of the deep), Wan also wants to help properly flesh Aquaman out in his solo outing. “The train on Justice League has kind of set off already! That’s basically Zack’s vision for that world, but you know, early on, Zack [Snyder] tried to involve me as much as he could and I really appreciated that,” Wan said.

It’s just that it was very hard for me to solely focus on it, because I was still in the midst of finishing up and shooting Conjuring 2 for Warner Bros. – the same studio! So it’s this very interesting world, you know? As much as they wanted me to be involved with Aquaman early on, I was busy making a movie for them. [Laughs] But now that everything is finishing up, I’m definitely getting in there much, much more. And I’m definitely really excited about running with my standalone movie.

You have to make the best movie you can. You have to make the best movie out of yours. You want to stay true and you want to be respectful and honor the world that we all collectively live together – the cinematic universe. So you want to honor that, but at the same time, you’ve got to make the best movie you can for your own movie.

A hero is defined by his villains however, and Arthur Curry will be facing down his greatest nemesis in Aquaman according to The Wrap: Black Manta. Silly helmet be damned, Black Manta has always been a properly deadly deep sea dick to Curry. Despite having no super-powers of his own, Black Manta’s extensive collection of deep sea diving suits, weapons and ruthless aggression has always made him a true threat, especially with several origins that have tied into the personal history of Curry himself.
