Batman V Superman is getting an R-rated ultimate edition release

2 min read

For the Blu-Ray release that is. What started with Blade Dredd 3D The Crow Watchmen Deadpool yes totally Deadpool and no other movie ever, is currently picking up some momentum. Just like one of the best heels in the history of the WWE, movie studios are now keen to hop onto the Rated R bandwagon, with upcoming films possibly being tweaked to be grittier, sexier spectacles that completely ignore why movies like Deadpool actually worked with and used an adult rating to its advantage.

Batman V Superman: Dawson’s Creek is the latest such high-profile flick of men in tights clobbering one another to head in that direction. But not for its theatrical release. According to FilmRatings.com, the MPAA has officially had Zack Snyder‘s Batman v Superman rated R for the upcoming Blu-Ray release for Dawn Of Justice: Ultimate Edition, specifically for scenes that include “sequences of violence.”

That’s going to need to be some pretty extensive violence to earn that rating, something that harkens back to director Zack Snyder’s days spent filling the screen with slow-motion blood and decapitated heads in 300. How the extended cut has managed to achieve that however, is beyond me. After all, Man of Steel ended with a particularly graphic case of neck-snapping, and was still rated PG-13.

With the American rating system, you can get away with a lot of violence on the big and small screen, so long as there aren’t any genitals present. Jokes aside, I doubt that this particular exists solely because of Deadpool and its success. Batman V Superman has been in the works ever since Man of Steel wrapped up in 2013, and it’d be close to impossible for Snyder to cut his film into a grittier edit in the two weeks or so since Deadpool has been on circuit. That’s just a silly idea.

Snyder is no stranger to creating films with more adult content in mind. Hell, just look at the theatrical and Director’s cut versions of his Watchmen movie to get an idea of his style for superheroic violence. Secondly, can you imagine the level of violence that would be needed to push Batman V Superman into R-rated territory, considering the fact that the main fight happens to be between a solar-powered alien immigrant who finds himself battering a psychotic billionaire in clunky Robocop armour?

There’s most likely something else at play here, some other scenes that warrant the extra rating, with some rumours suggesting that we’ll see the rather graphic demise of a certain Robin in a flashback sequence. If Snyder doesn’t pull his punches on that rumoured scene, I can totally get behind an R-rating.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is finally out next month on March  25. It stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and one super-excited fanboy who has been stalking production on the film for two years now. Spoiler: IT WAS ME.

The violence doesn’t need to be that extensive to warrant an R rating. Avengers was almost slapped with an R rating because of the one tiny little scene where Loki’s sceptre stabbed right through Coulson. They had to fight hard to keep the rating at PG. So a couple of batarangs in the face might be the cause of an R rating.

Rated R blu ray release lol i bet it’s the same as Harry Potter adult covers edition.

Don’t try and fuck with Deadpool’s R rating. Batman V Superman is going to suck… Because Ben Affleck is in it. Let’s not forget Dare Devil and Gigli. Let’s not forget every fucking movie he has been in. God Batman is going to suck.

The only thing that will save Batman V Superman is Mark hamill.
