Irrespective of what you thought of Batman v Superman, chances are you still left the cinema (or couch, if you waited for the much improved Ultimate Edition home release) being impressed by Ben Affleck’s turn as the dark knight. The actor’s performance as this much more badass Batman, combined with his recent Oscar-winning film making efforts outside of the DC Extended Universe, has also seriously got people amped for Affleck’s planned solo Batman movie which he’ll direct and co-write with DC Comics stalwart Geoff Johns.

Up until now, we’ve heard the rumours about the solo Batman movie’s potentially expansive villainous lineup as well as the fact that this solo Batman movie would possibly see Affleck’s dark knight going toe to toe with Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke. And if you’re wondering why I keep referring to it as “solo Batman movie”, it’s because this… solo Batman movie doesn’t have a title yet. But while chatting with the Associated Press (via Screenrant) about his new directorial effort The Accountant, Affleck confirmed previous rumours that his movie will simply be titled The Batman.

“The movie I think is going to be called ‘The Batman’. At least that’s what we’re going with right now. I might change it… That’s about all I got right now. We’re working on the script, the script is going well, I’m really excited about it.”

Well, that’s a lot less of an awkward mouthful than Batman v Superman: Damn This Title Is Just Bad And Did They Ever Actually Explain Why They Used V Instead of VS Because I Still Get Annoyed Every Single Time I Have To Type It Out?. As for when exactly we’ll be seeing The Batman, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes recently revealed that “Ben announced a Batman movie [that] he’s going to direct, star, write for – I think it’s a year and a half out”. Whether that year and a half marks the start of the production date or the actual release date is unclear, though the former is more than likely the more reasonable option. Warner Bros currently has an untitled DC Film scheduled for October 5 2018, and this would possibly line up with that.

It would maybe also give Affleck time to come up with a third change of clothes. Yes, “third” as it was recently revealed that besides his normal duds, Batman will be sporting a “tactical Batsuit” in the upcoming Justice League. This new suit is not just there to allow Batman to cosplay as Owlman from Zack Snyder’s Watchmen though (the resemblance is uncanny!), but it will also serve a narrative purpose, as Affleck explained to Mario Lopez on Extra (via CBR):

“There’s two suits in ‘Justice League’, one that we’ve seen before and then one that the he augments because of the nature of the nature of the … mission, which I can’t give away.”

“It was a chance for them to play with the suit and add elements to it and make it and kind of tech it out. And I thought they did a really good job. It was really fun.”

With Justice League reportedly featuring a plot point that addresses Batman’s willingness to kill in BvS, this suit will probably feature a bunch of Batman’s more traditional non-lethal gimmicks. Also, probably some armour reinforcements to throw down with an Apokalyptian demi-god named Steppenwolfe who likes to hang out in baths with creepy billionaires. That will definitely come in handy.

Justice League has just wrapped principal photography in London over the weekend, and is currently scheduled for release on November 17, 2017. Yes, more than a year from now. The wait is going to twist my Bat-nipples.

  1. I’m still silently hoping for a Dark Knight Returns movie with an older Batman and Michael Keaton is just the guy to do it.

Assault on Arkham is also the better Suicide Squad movie by a very long shot.

            XD
            Exactly.
Joker had just as few scenes in that movie but the impact he made was immense.

Still need to watch Suicide Squad. With all the mixed reactions to it, I have no preconceived ideas or hopes at all. Best way to go into a movie.

I went in giving it the benefit of the doubt. And that’s all I’ll say, without droning on again about it 🙂

I’ve read and heard enough droning about it already, so if you had droned, my eyes would have glazed, forming temporary cataracts which would only have slid off sometime in the future. Like, 5pm or so.
Which would have made work so much worse.

Haha. I’ve actually just gotten to point where I’ve just taken a back seat. See what they do with this iteration of Batman, their screwups and their successes with the characters. In a few years there will be a new one and then there’s other things to like or to complain about. The more it changes, the more it stays the same.

I quite like this Batman. I think Affleck is doing a good job with him. I’m obviously not a fan of him going around killing people, thought, but apart from that, I have nothing else to gripe about.

I love this Batman. From the start. He’s big and he’s a real brawler. I understand the killing thing, he’s done that a lot in the comics and he did so in the original 1980s Batman movie too.
The new joker on the other hand is just a terribly designed character. Leto does what he can with it, and he does a good job, but the writing and look of him just ruins it.

I agree. Although they’ve used a lot of the stuff from Dark Knight Returns in BvS already.
I’d love to see a transition to Batman Beyond, that would be pretty awesome.
The movies are always the same villains, the same era, the same themes. We need a fresh new one, but they’re all too afraid to wander from the stock standard Batman era and find it very important to show us Bruce’s parents’ death in each one.

The one thing I did like that they used was when Superman gets caught in that nuclear blast. He looks all emaciated, but then when the sun hits him, he regenerates.
