The first RED movie was a bit of a surprise hit back in 2011. Retired secret agents, reunited by the fact that someone wanted to send them to the massive retirement village in the sky found themselves tangled up in a conspiracy and the raving insanity of John Malkovich.
All in all, a fun film with a great cast attached to it and some popcorn action and stunts added to the mix. Which is why no one complained when a sequel was commissioned, reuniting the original cast of Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren and Malkovich with several more explosions and car chases.
In RED 2, the high-octane action-comedy sequel to the worldwide sleeper hit, retired black-ops CIA agent Frank Moses reunites his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device. To succeed, they’ll need to survive an army of relentless assassins, ruthless terrorists and power-crazed government officials, all eager to get their hands on the next-generation weapon. The mission takes Frank and his motley crew to Paris, London and Moscow. Outgunned and outmanned, they have only their cunning wits, their old-school skills, and each other to rely on as they try to save the world-and stay alive in the process.
Hey, old people being badasses with itchy trigger fingers! Just like my dad! I’ll be honest, RED 2 doesn’t look to be a piece of Oscar-worthy cinematography, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t at least look like fun. And there’s something refreshing about seeing Malkovich play a bit of an unhinged oddball with an erect stick of dynamite in pocket and a human being in his trunk. RED 2 is out in August, and also stars Mary-Louise Parker, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, David Thewlis and in a quick jump from that other movie that Willis is performing in, GI Joe’s Byung-hun Lee.
