I’m not the biggest fan of crowdsourcing. Very, very few pitches are able to make good on their promises of turning your donation into an actual product, and you don’t even know what kind of game you’ll actually end up with. There are of course, exceptions to the rule such as Pillars of Eternity or a tidal wave of board games that seem to be all the rage lately.
Tim Schafer’s Double Fine studios has experienced the rush of crowdfunding. Their Broken Age game broke all manner of records on Kickstarter and largely delivered on the promises that it made. Clearly, the studio has had a taste of that cake and wants more. Hence the current crowdfunding campaign for Psychonauts, a sequel to a game that has been waiting to be downloaded in my Steam library for almost three years now. Because I truly am a horrible human being.
Right now, Psychonauts 2 is sitting on a pile of donations that has raised $2 million of the $3.3 million that Double Fine needs to help partly fund the sequel. There’s still 35 days left to go, and I’d wager that Double Fine hits their goal within the next week or two. And that’s good for them! No complaints here. Because if Psychonauts 2 is a crowdfunding success, it could pave the way to getting another Double Fine property resurrected. The gnarliest, most metal game of all time:
Brutal Legend.
Sweet Grodd, I have far too much love for that game. And I know, that Brutal Legend was the kind of game that catered to very particular tastes. It wasn’t perfect, but it hit so many buttons for me. The visuals, the soundtrack, Jack Black’s ballad of the roadie and that strange action-RTS gameplay mechanic. Great stuff, when you really sink your stuff into it.
Over on the FAQs for the Psychonauts 2 Fig crowdfunding campaign, the idea of a Brutal Legend 2 was brought up:
We’ve always said that we wanted to make sequels to both Psychonauts and Brutal Legend. We can’t make any promises but if Psychonauts is a success for us, then perhaps Brutal Legend 2 will be more possible?
I’ll take any bit of Brutal Legend 2 news that I can. I’m still not 100% behind crowdfunding, but hell, I’ll break my own words for a chance to wield Eddie’s axe once again and lead some headbangers into battle. And another chance to meet Ozzy Osborne’s guardian of metal.

He stuffed up Broken Age’s funding and development costs horribly and Massive Chalice is a bit of a marmite game, so I’d be wary of throwing money at him.

I won’t fund the game, or play it in an “early access” state, but I’ll probably get it at full release if they don’t completely screw it up.

At least he’s (Tim Schafer) not as bad as Peter Molyneux (Godus still hasn’t been released!).
I’m a fan of Psychonauts, but I think I’ll wait the 3+ years until this game actually comes into existence before throwing any money at it. Looks as though its easily going to hit its funding goal.
The part in the pitch video that features GabeN is awesome 🙂
