The latest true-life thriller from director Paul Greengrass – and most recent bit of evidence that Tom Hanks is an acting god – reduced Nick and I to simpering messes – and that’s after taking a few years off our lives with insane tension. I felt that Captain Phillips brought it all to the table , from deft directing, great scripting and truly awards worthy performances from several cast members – Hanks is probably a shoe-in for an Oscar, with debuting co-star Barkhad Abdi not far behind – and is easily one of my top 3 films of the year.
But what did you guys think? Did Captain Phillips sink or swim? As always, this is for people who have seen the movie, so BEWARE SPOILERS if you haven’t!

This is with out a doubt one of the best display of acting ever. Tom Hanks is bloody amazing, and if he doesn’t win the Oscar for this I will go Somalian on everyone’s asses! If you have not seen this movie people I cannot beg you enough to remedy that. They sometimes say that cinema is magic, and that is true of this movie. I have never seen anyone suffer from such allergies that make ones eyes leak as I did Kervyn. Odd as I was like a rock, an unmovable force… No, those are lies, I leaked like a fucked submarine.

Stunning!
As a South African ship’s captain frequently trading in the Gulf of Aden Area, I can vouch for the authenticity of the marine and piracy scenes. In many respects they are terrifyingly lifelike. Of course, being filmed on a ship and not in a studio makes a massive difference to reality.
