Con Man… because Convention Man doesn’t sound as cool. The crowd-funded comedy web series about an actor famous for his role in a cancelled sci-fi series making his way through the endless convention circuit appropriately released its first trailer at Comic-Con, and in case you missed what the web series is about:
Wray Nerely (Alan Tudyk) was a co-star on Spectrum, a sci-fi series which was canceled –Too Soon– yet became a cult classic. Wray’s good friend, Jack Moore (Nathan Fillion) starred in the series and has gone on to become a major movie star. While Jack enjoys the life of an A-lister, Wray tours the sci-fi circuit as a guest of conventions, comic book stores, and lots of pop culture events. The show will feature all the weird and crazy things that happen to Wray along the way to these events.
But enough of that, let’s see what 46,993 backers who enthusiastically ponied up $3,156,179 will get for their money:
Money well spent I’d say, that looks hilariously on-point. It also features a veritable who’s-who of actors and directors who’ve made their mark in various sci-fi series over the years; I’d advise against playing the drinking game of taking a shot every time someone recognisable makes a cameo – you wouldn’t last a single 10-minute episode.
Just off the top of my head from the trailer there’s (obviously) Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion, but also Amy Acker, Felicia Day, Sean Astin, Casper Van Dien, Gina Torres, Milo Ventimiglia, Wil Wheaton, Sean Maher, Kervyn the village arsonist, Michael Dorn, Seth Green, Nick’s former (and now very relieved) crush Tricia Helfer (have sympathy for Chris Pratt), and Joss Whedon. There’s more I recognised but didn’t know their names off-hand, tell me who else you see in the comments.
Con Man will air exclusively on Vimeo in September, and the 10-minute-long-each 12-episode first season will set you back $15.
