Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • We’re all still buzzing from the news of Spider-Man joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I bet you are too! Of course those folks on the internet, with too much talent and time on their hands, are just as excited to see the Wall Crawler joining the Avengers, and have whipped up this really professional looking teaser in response.

  • Although I didn’t feel that After Earth deserved as much scorn as some critics were heaping on it, I’m sure as hell never going to call it a great movie. Some of you may have felt even less favourably about the movie and found it painful. Know who else found it a painful? Star Will Smith. But not because of the movie itself, but rather what the movie bombing at the box office meant to him and his family.

“That was the most painful failure in my career. WILD WILD WEST was less painful than AFTER EARTH because my son was involved in AFTER EARTH and I led him into it. That was excruciating. What I learned from that failure is how you win. I got reinvigorated after the failure of AFTER EARTH. I stopped working for a year and a half. I had to dive into why it was so important for me to have number-one movies. And I never would have looked at myself in that way.”

“I [got] the box-office numbers on Monday and I was devastated for about twenty-four minutes, and then my phone rang and I found out my father had cancer. That put it in perspective —viciously.”

  • Poster of the day: Cannibal Holocaust

  • Gee thanks, Cracked. Thanks for ruining one of my favourite childhood movie memories in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, by revealing that in real life anybody shrunk down to tiny size would almost instantly freeze to death. And don’t even get me started on the werewolf diarrhea in your list of 5 Iconic Fantasy Characters Whose Bodies Wouldn’t Work.
  • Oh, Ryan Reynolds. You’re such a tease!

  • I hate to be the one to break the news to you, but dragons aren’t real. All those firebreathing drakes in Game of Thrones? Yeah, they’re nothing but bright green pillows stuck on the end of a stick. Now that’s acting!!

  • If you’re ever doubted France’s more relaxed attitudes towards sex, then look no further than Fifty Shades of Grey. Whereas the steamy adaptation has been slapped with R-ratings or 18 age restrictions everywhere else in the world for its “unusual behavior and graphic nudity”, those Frenchies have decided that a PG-12 is good enough for them. Yes, 13-year old French girls will be going to see a movie where a man ties up a women and whips her and calls it love.
  • We’ve often featured exceptional home-made movie costumes on this site. That won’t be the case here. Store bought Halloween costumes are usually quite terrible, but despite how much money Marvel makes and the popularity of their characters, their costumes often leave me in a state of confusion, where I don’t know whether I should laugh or cry. Case in point: These recent creations for Avengers: Age of Ultron.
  • You can mark today in your calendar as the day you learned of the existence of Guardians of the Galaxy/My Little Pony mashup fan fiction. Yes, you read that right. Not your cup of tea? How about A-Team fanfiction where Liam Neeson’s Hannibal catches some bug that causes him to grow octopus-like tentacles and then use them to do… er, stuff, really bad stuff to Bradley Cooper’s Face. Yes, you read that right too. And you can read about a whole lot more weirdness in Empire’s list of 12 Of The Internet’s Most Bizarre Works Of Fanfiction.
  • Forget that silly little boy who lives under the stairs, everybody knows who the true tragic hero of the Harry Potter series is: Severus Snape. Throughout the books and the movies, you deviated from “hating” him – note the air quotes, because nobody can really hate Alan Rickman – to loving him, to sympathizing with him, to revering him and everything in between. And now that entire story is finally being told completely without the annoying distractions of bespectacled wunderkinds and their plucky sidekicks, in this fan-created supercut which shows us Snape’s heartbreakingly heroic tale in chronological order.

If you have anything you would like to contribute to Extras, whether it be interesting stories, funny videos, or artistic photos of yourself in morally questionable poses, feel free to drop a mail to kervyn@themovies.co.za.
