We’ve oogled (oogle-chakka’d?) at all the explosive, crazy looking trailers, we’ve laughed along to all the witty clips, we’ve pored over each pic released to try and glimpse whatever details we could, and all along, despite our ever-mounting excitement levels, we were quietly worried that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy may just be a little too… everything. A little too geeky, a little too quirky, a little too out there with its alien characters and off-beat humour.
According to the Los Angeles film press folk who became the first people to see the movie at a special screening on Saturday night, we were worried for nothing. It appears that writer/director James Gunn and his cast have not only knocked this one out of the park, but that Marvel probably has their next big franchise on their hands. And its biggest stars are a giant living tree and a talking raccoon.
While early reviews are still embargoed, several of the press in attendance took to Twitter to share their brief thoughts on the movie, and thus far I am yet to see a single bad thing written about it.
#GuardiansOfTheGalaxy was fantastic! Not a false beat in two hours and just an insane amount of fun! #GOTG

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is another big win for Marvel! Every single character steals every scene.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a ridiculous fun ride. Hilarious, action packed, and a great ensemble. Totally loved it.

I really liked GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. The characters work so well together. Gunn nails space opera.

@alyson_chase it’s all about Groot

Groot is the new star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I’m excited for GUARDIANS 2 not for plot reasons but bc the heavy lifting of establishing everything is done and the characters can sing.

Weird thing: while GUARDIANS has the most Thanos-wank yet it’s the Marvel movie that stands most on its own. It feels whole.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY opens up the Marvel universe in a great way. Movie is awesome & extremely funny. Congrats @JamesGunn. You did it.

And anyone wondering if a talking racoon and tree wouldn’t work, they have some of the best scenes and I loved both of them. #GUARDIANS

To paraphrase an infamous anime episode, my hype levels just shot up to OVER 9000! Nick and I will be watching Guardians of the Galaxy on Wednesday and suddenly I have to wonder why in 2014, we still don’t have any time machines yet? Because these next few days are going to draaaaaaaag.
PS: One thing mentioned by a few press in attendance was that this screening had no post-credits scene as is traditional for Marvel movies. There is supposed to be one though, but the fact that Marvel didn’t any word of it out early means that it’s probably something massive.
