Ben Stiller in a still from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Nothing beats a good ol’ slice of imagination. Trust me, when you’re neck deep in asylum applications while you’re waiting for your new ID book at home affairs, whatever happens to be going on inside your head at that moment will bring a smile to your face.

And imagination is the name of the game for Ben Stiller in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, as his next directorial feature won’t be comedy and exploding British people. It’ll be something more soulful.

Ben Stiller directs and stars in THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, James Thurber’s classic story of a day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker (Kristen Wiig) are threatened, Walter takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.

If there’s one thing that I’m hoping to see here, it’ll be Stiller playing a character who isn’t the usual panicky goof. I’m not too hopeful that’ll actual happen, but if he can at least downplay his usual schtick, it’ll be enough. Stiller looks like he’s got some great technical ideas brewing for this film, and the overall story and cast next to him seems pretty solid so far. It’s not the first time that James Thurber’s book has made it to the big screen either, as the story appeared originally way back in 1947.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty will be daydreaming into theatres in December this year, and also stars Kristen Wiig, Shirley MacLaine, Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn and Sean Penn. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, the song playing in the trailer is “Dirty Paws” by Of Monsters and Men.
