Jack Bauer will be punching Europeans in 24: Live Another Day

While it might not strictly be movie news, over her at The Movies HQ we love Jack Bauer and his crazy, action-packed and intense series, ’24’, especially considering his small-screen adventures rival any espionage thriller you can name from the big screen. Well, I’ve got some good news for the rest of you 24 fans…Jack’s back!

24_Live_Another_Day_News_Image_01He’s survived 8 seasons and a movie’s worth of terrorist activity, all the while managing to stay the most badass action hero we’ve ever seen on the small screen. As most of you know, Jack’s fate is uncertain after the end of the 8th season, as he heads off on his own – a fugitive from the law and a martyr for the survival of the United States of America. Many hours have been spent speculating what could have happened to Agent Bauer, but with the announcement of 24: Live Another Day, we are finally going to get our answer. All we know is, he’s heading to London!

Here’s what Kiefer Sutherland (Bauer) and the creators of the 24: Live Another Day has to say:

Sutherland: “’24’ has always had such a global sensibility” …”But to be able to tell this intense ’24’-style story with the beauty of Europe’s history and architecture as the backdrop is going to be fascinating. Hopefully, by the time you’re finished watching an episode, you’ll feel like you’ve been there…on the edge of your seat.”

Co-Producer and co-showrunner Evan Katz:”We wanted the show’s return to be an event, and part of that was putting Jack in a very different context. Four years ago, we left Jack a fugitive from justice and we’re going to pick him up four years later in London.”

Executive Producer and co-showrunner Manny Coto: “Jack is soon back on the run and it takes us into the streets of London and in places that break new ground for the show. We’ve shot in New York, Washington, Los Angeles and Cape Town — but now we’re in London and Jack’s loose on the streets of Europe, hunted by and hunting bad guys.”

Jack Bauer, of course, travelled to Cape Town to film 24: Redemption, which takes place between the 5th and 6th season. I’m extremely excited to see the return of 24 and while the last seasons might have suffered a little in quality of writing since first few seasons, I’m pretty sure enough time has passed for a great new 24 series to hit our screens. While it has been rumoured that each episode will not be set in ‘real time’ anymore, I’m pretty sure this has yet to be confirmed and if an updated format or show structure is what the show needs to make a successful return, I’m all for it!

Slightly worrying is the new series title, ‘Live Another Day‘, which is going to be a constant reminded to James Bond’s ‘Die Another Day’, which took a huge, steamy poop right on our beloved franchise. That said, seeing Jack Bauer action his way through the streets of London is a highly exciting prospect and if  ’24’ can successfully manage a more global approach, I am pretty sure we can expect loads more Agent Bauer in our future. Now, can anyone remind me whether Nina Meyers and Tony Almeida are still alive?  Also, am I the only one hoping Mandy, the mysterious assassin played by Mia Kirshner, show up again?
