About 7 months ago some rumours started circulating that the stars of two of the greatest boxing films of all time, Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro, would be squaring off in a new pugilistic picture called Grudge Match.
At the time, not much more was said, other than all of us going “RAGING BULL VS ROCKY! HOLY ANGRY ITALIANS, BATMAN!”
But now we finally have confirmation that the two stars have entered negotiations on the film and are looking to start production next year.
The movie is going to be directed by Get Smart‘s Peter Segal and Warner Bros has pegged Entourage creator Doug Ellin to provide the latest draft of Tim Kelleher’s script, which will see two retired boxers, Billy “The Kid” McGuigan and Henry “Razor” Sharp, settle an old score when they get into the ring with each other for one final round.
All of which points toward this actually being a comedy, rather than the dramatic film some were predicting when the news first broke. Considering the fact that Stallone still has a body that looks like it’s been carved out of granite whereas De Niro’s is starting to look like it’s been carved out of a loaf of wet bread, playing this up for laughs would probably be the better option here.
There’s no set date yet for the film to start production, but seeing as De Niro has no less than 7 projects lined up between now and the end of 2013, it’s going to be a scheduling nightmare for the Aging Bull.
