Have you seen Layer Cake? It’s a quirky British crime thriller in which Daniel Craig tries to extract himself from his career as a high-level drug dealer. Craig played his trademark cool, calm and collected professional trying to navigating a sea of chaos and danger. You know: steady under pressure, deadly in a fight. That sounds a little like another actor we all know – and he’s signed up to replace Craig in the sequel.
Yes, Jason Statham is returning to the role of a drug dealer under siege, though you’d think by now his enemies would have learned their lesson. Statham has acquired the rights to Viva La Madness, the sequel to the Layer Cake novel. Suitably the book’s author, J. J. Connolly, is working on a script adaptation – as he did with Layer Cake. Deadline dishes out the details:
Connolly never names his chief protagonist anti-hero, but Statham will play the same nameless character we last saw trying to survive a gunshot wound in Layer Cake. It took Connolly more than a decade to follow that tale. Here, his protagonist is looking for a beach to land on in retirement, but instead he gets involved with trans-Atlantic drug deals, money laundering, high-tech electronic fraud, London lowlifes and Venezuelan drug cartels.
Viva La Madness will probably take a while to enter production, as Statham is currently filming Fast/Furious 7 and The Expendables 3. In the meantime, here’s a picture of Statham’s better half Rosie Huntington-Whiteley holding the book.
