Local weekend box office – Newcomers can’t hustle Avengers: Endgame out of the top spot

In what could only be a surprise to people whose address has been 1a Basement Level, A Big Rock for the last three weeks, Avengers: Endgame is still the biggest movie in South Africa (just like the rest of the world). The record-breaking Marvel superhero blockbuster added an extra R6.1 million this weekend past to take its local box office total just shy of R90 million. That is a lot of money, but still short of Black Panther’s all-time SA record of R107.1 million. Black Panther took 13 weeks to reach that point though, whereas Endgame is nipping at its heels after just 3, so expect this record to fall shortly as well.

As for the rest of the charts, we had a trio of newcomers in The Hustle, The Intruder, and Poms. The Hustle – a remake of classic comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson – was the only one that made any serious impact as it opened in 2nd place with a respectable R1.8 million. The Intruder has been a surprise hit in the US, but locally it’s faceplanted straight out of the gate as it could only earn R611k for a 4th place debut. Poms is doing even worse as the drama is stuck bringing up the rear of the top 10 with a miserly R165k.

Let’s see what the rest of the box office chart looks like:
