Monday Box Office Report – Bond is back and Leonidas scores an own goal

It wasn’t a particularly memorable weekend for the box office, as the past couple of days saw returns that were underwhelming at best. Clocking in with a total of $73 million, the box office experienced the third lowest grossing weekend of the year.

But with The Hobbit right around the corner, business should be picking up again soon. Here’s a look at who made what over the weekend.

  • Skyfall – $11 Million
  • Rise of the Guardians – $10.5 Million
  • The Twilight saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 – $9.2 Million
  • Lincoln – $9.1 Million
  • Life of Pi – $8.3 Million
  • Playing for keeps – $6 Million
  • Wreck-It Ralph – $4.5 Million
  • Red Dawn – $4.2 Million
  • Flight – $3.1 Million
  • Killing them softly – $2.7 Million

Bond was back on top over the weekend, as Skyfall secured the number one spot. With a grand total of over $261 million so far, the film is closing in fast on the record set by The Amazing Spider-Man this year, as that particular film became the highest grossing Sony property in over five years, with $262 million.

Not even King Leonidas could save the day or the football, with Playing for Keeps, as the Gerard Butler film bombed with a debut in sixth place. Could that be a result of The Hobbit arriving this week? Who knows, but that specific release for the footie film could have been more suicidal than the final battle charge in 300.

The Life of Pi continues to do good business (Check out the review, later today!) as it remained in the fifth spot, for a third straight week. Meanwhile, the latest Brad Pitt starring flick, Killing them softly, continued to bomb as it dropped to the tenth spot on the charts. Expect that one to have pulled a vanishing act by next week.
