Nintendo 3DS

It was with very little fanfare and no shortage of surprise that Nintendo announced it was developing a successor to the incredibly popular DSi a few weeks back.

Their low key announcement is widely regarded as being forced out of them due to the hardware company being required to make an announcement and that we will only really see a real announcement at E3 this year.

But it seems that the 3DS is closer to be released than anyone has previously realised. A few really optimistic people were expecting a pre Christmas launch while the majority were expecting the console to launch in Japan mid next year and then hit western shelves in the run up to Christmas 2011.

But a very senior publishing source in the UK has come out and stated

“It’s a surprise – we were expecting it much closer to Christmas. But I suppose it gives Nintendo the opportunity to get it front and centre in people’s minds nice and early. In my experience, you don’t launch a product that early to Christmas unless you’re confident in it – and going to spend a lot of money on it. We’re reassured that Nintendo is going to give it some decent backing in Q4.”

I personally cannot wait to see how this thing works and once we get our hands on one at E3 we will let you know exactly how it feels and works.
