Either these are really poorly hidden planned plot twists or they are still not sure exactly what is going with the story, but after numerous reports where we were told Noomi Rapace would not be joining the cast of Alien: Covenant – despite being one of only two characters to come out of the film Prometheus alive – we are now told that she will in fact be part of the sequel film’s cast after all. In fact, she is apparently already on the set with with the production.
Deadline reports the news that the star is already in Australia filming with the crew, however it is still unclear on whether this was part of the plan all along or simply a change of heart from director Ridley Scott and the producers. Also, from all the info revealed on the film thus far, we have no idea how her character Elizabeth Shaw will fit into the story. Needless to say, sometimes it’s good to have things remain a surprise and hopefully this is still one of those occasions.
At the end of Prometheus (SPOILER ALERT if you haven’t already seen that movie. And if you haven’t, don’t worry you didn’t miss much and can catch up on it here), the ‘synthetic’ android David (played by Michael Fassbender) and Shaw are the only two to escape from the mysterious planet as an alien xenomorph creature is also revealed for the first time. The movie ends with the pair setting off to find the home planet of the Engineers, the vastly powerful alien beings who created the xenomorphs and may have even dabbled in human development.
However, we previously knew that only David would feature in the new film, so we can only assume there is some split between the two characters in the setup of the film, either as part of the story or in a flashback. Or perhaps we will be surprised altogether and Rapace’s Shaw will in fact be playing a more significant part in the movie.
According to Movie Pilot, however, they report that she will definitely be a minor character only in the movie, so don’t expect too much from her. With no official confirmation though, this is just speculation on my part and rumours on theirs.
The official synopsis of the film is below:
Set as the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus, Alien: Covenant connects directly to Ridley Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. It begins with the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. There, the crew discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.
What do you think could be the potential story arc around Rapace’s character?
