Paul Feig talks about SPY sequel, confirms Jason Statham's return

Spy-4

Quite possibly the biggest movie surprise of 2015 for me was Spy. Sure the pairing of writer/director Paul Feig and star Melissa McCarthy had produced good results in the past with Bridesmaids, but The Heat had been just decent, McCarthy’s loudmouthed schtick was starting to grate terribly and the trailers didn’t particularly grab me initially. And then I watched the movie. And holy crap, did I laugh my not-so-insubstantial arse off as it poked fun at the spy movie genre in the most hilarious R-rated way.

It was honestly one of the best movies of the year, and luckily for us it appears that we’re more than likely going to get another, as Feig revealed to Empire.

“That’s another world that I don’t want to walk away from. It’s the first thing I did that I set up to be a possible franchise and Melissa is dying to do it. I have a story for it, and a funny idea that will kick it off that involves Statham.”

That last bit is especially good news, as Jason Statham’s totally obtuse, hard man secret agent was easily the highlight of the movie, stealing every scene with his buffoonish antics as he took the piss out of his own action hero persona. Who would ever have that the British martial artist had such incredible comic chops? Well, clearly Feig did. And he’s making damn sure that Statham’s secret agent Rick Ford will stay as dimwitted as ever.

“[Melissa McCarthy’s] Susan Cooper is one of my favourite characters I’ve ever come up with, but Rick Ford is possibly the one I’ll take to the grave with me. Will he get any more self-aware in the sequel? No, god no. He’ll get less self-aware.”

Brilliant. Now let’s just hope he keeps up those hilariously outrageous lies.
