Why Him header

Why Him? is not just a question everyone asks about Nick, but also the title of the upcoming comedy starring Bryan Cranston and James Franco about a family meeting their daughter’s fiance, an eccentric internet billionaire, for the first time. I think it’s safe to presume from the title that it’s not love at first sight.

The official plot synopsis is as follows:

Over the holidays, Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad and his family visit his daughter at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco).

The straight-laced Ned thinks Laird, who has absolutely no filter, is a wildly inappropriate match for his daughter. The one-sided rivalry—and Ned’s panic level—escalates when he finds himself increasingly out of step in the glamorous high-tech hub, and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.

I think we can all guess how this will play out in the end, but I’ll be damned if this doesn’t look like a fun ride! We can probably all identify with the parents’ absolute horror upon meeting their daughter’s fiance for the first time and seeing, well, that.

What do you think?

Why Him? is due for release in the US on 25 December. Directed by John Hamburg (I Love You, Man), who also co-wrote alongside Ian Helfer (The Oranges), it stars Bryan Cranston, James Franco, Zoey Deutch, Megan Mullally, Adam Devine and Keegan-Michael Key.
