Ridley Scott wants to make another Blade Runner movie

Blade Runner 2049 may mysteriously not have lit up the box office, but it was without a doubt one of the most beautiful movies of 2049. Not only was the incredible cinematography and direction by Denis Villeneuve a virtual textbook on how movies should be made, but its story only added to the mystery around its world and characters. One that begs for a sequel to its already gripping story.

The loss at the box office is likely not going to make the studios particularly enthusiastic about wanting to do another one, but at least Ridley Scott, who directed the original film and produced the latest version is keen to do more and believes that there is at least one more movie in the franchise to be made, as he revealed to Digital Spy:

I think there is another story. I’ve got another one ready to evolve and be developed, so there is certainly one to be done for sure.

That’s great news for fans and pretty much everyone who loves movies. I would argue that this movie should be made just for the benefit of mankind rather than for profit, but I’m not the one who will be throwing money into its production (unless anyone wants to throw money at me), so I guess I have less of a say in the matter. It’s also worth noting that Scott simply mentions that he has an idea for another film and no definitive script, so much like the lengthy gap between the first two movies, another Blade Runner film is still a fair way out even if they do get the funding for it.

If they do go ahead, they may need to rein its budget in tough to make it slightly more appealing to the studio. They may also need to find a way of speeding up its pacing because I believe a lot of the reason why the film didn’t do well at the Box Office was simply that it was too long for most people’s bottoms to endure.

This speculating about a sequel though is all just a pipe dream, because it’s unlikely to be made unless Scott can somehow convince a studio to throw more money into what is anything but a sure bet. For now, the best thing we as fans can do is wait for 2049 to be released on DVD/Blu-Ray and then go out and buy it in droves. Perhaps a strong performance in the home viewing market could persuade studios to give Scott an opportunity to tell yet another story in the Blade Runner universe.
