SA’s Weekend Top 10 Movie Chart: Suicide Squad at the top, Tarzan falls, My Father's War just makes the cut

Here’s a throwback for you kids: what does CKY stand for? Did you get my clever joke? ARE YOU LAUGHING?!

No, because once again movie geeks are suffering from a catastrophic failure in taking the right stuff seriously. Last week I had my say about how out of control fan culture has gotten. Now I read some idiot is suing because there weren’t enough Joker scenes in Suicide Squad.

For the record, if people ask if I like comic books or their movies, I just say no. I call them childish. I make veiled comments about the size of geeks’ members. Like tentacle porn and not wearing underwear, protect your reputation by keeping your comic love private.

Luckily the public is not the loud minority of entitled fans out there, so Suicide Squad opened at the top of the charts this past weekend. That may or may not last: Batman v Superman enjoyed a pretty good local run, while X-Men: Apocalypse barely hung around long enough to pay its share of the bill. If Suicide Squad can hold onto the top spot again next week, it may be in good shape.

No Time for Monkey Business

The arrival of DC’s villains pushes everything down at least by one notch. No sweat yet for the main pack of movies like Jason Bourne and Ghostbusters, but the stains are showing on Legend of Tarzan. That has dropped two spots: at face value not a big deal, but in reality it slid more than its peers. Bad news for a fairly new blockbuster.

On the other hand, romcom Me Before You is doing really well – a rarity for that type of film.

The only other new entry is My Father’s War, a local drama that shines a toxic relationship between a father and son through the prism of the 1980s border war. It sounds pretty interesting, but sadly dramas like this don’t seem to attract audiences.

Leaving the charts is BFG, which did quite poorly, and God Is Not Dead 2, which didn’t get to three weeks on the charts. So no divine intervention, I guess…
