Yea latest South African movie charts, but now with more numbers! So many numbers! Too many damn numbers... Why can't the interns do this?

No, there isn’t a movie called Numbers. Wait, there is – that strange thriller Jim Carey made a few years ago to convince us he’s not just about comedy. But there isn’t one being released now, invoking this site’s style guide of capitalising movie names in headlines.

Yes, yes, too much info. Where is the damn chart already?

The Damn Numbers

BoxOfficeMojo.com has added local earnings and percentages, which is really the more interesting stuff in the top 10. One day I will figure out a nicer way to put these across, but for now let’s just gorge:

  • 01. SUICIDE SQUAD (incl 3D & Imax)

The Winners

SUICIDE SQUAD

Percentages aren’t everything, otherwise Suicide Squad would look worse. But it has maintained three weeks at the top, which is a solid run for a blockbuster. Pete’s Dragon arguably did the best. Despite falling one spot, it hardly shifted at all in terms of revenues.

The Losers

ghostbusters0004

Ghostbusters gets a kick in the teeth, taking a knock down from fifth to eighth and losing over half of its revenue momentum. Ice Age: Collision Course also looks poorly, but it at least has made more than twice what Ghostbusters could so far, so it’s just phoning in. Things don’t look quite as bad for Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, but its stumble from second to fourth is a little soon.

The New Blood

Three films grace our screens for the first time this week. Bad Moms make a stellar opening for a raunchy comedy, taking the second spot. Nerve, a thriller about a dangerous online truth-or-dare contest, settles in at a fairly okay sixth. But I’m saddened to see Kubo and the Two Strings, the new film from stop-motion masters Laika, only debut at seventh. Hopefully it will rise when audiences recognise its awesomeness.

Nice seeing you

central-intelligence-dwayne-rock-johnson-kevin-hart

The last three films from last week are cleanly swept aside. Central Intelligence finishes its top 10 run with over R30 million in the bank. Legend of Tarzan bows out with around half of that and local drama My Father’s War barely cleared a million before calling it a day.
