Yes people, you read that right. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven, Contagion) is getting ready to film a interactive “choose your own adventure” styled movie for HBO entitled Mosaic.
Now I have very fond memories of the “Choose your own adventure” books growing up, as I’m sure many of you do as well. Mosaic is not actually based on those books, but will be borrowing their concept of having the reader, or audience in this case, determine the outcome of the story they’re reading/watching. Will the concept work as a movie though, is the big question here. Given his impressive body of work, I would put my trust in Soderbergh to pull this off. According to Collider there are reports that production on this movie will start as early as next month.
Here’s what Steven Soderbergh has to say about the movie.
I believe the good people at HBO are genuinely enthusiastic about Mosaic for two reasons: first, it represents a fresh way of experiencing a story and sharing that experience with others; second, it will require a new Emmy category, and we will be the only eligible nominee.
In order to make the movie completely interactive Mosaic will be shot with multiple endings, where the viewer will then be allowed to decide on the outcome via an app. I’m guessing that this will happen “live” while the movie is airing on HBO so that the votes via the app can be tallied and effected, but how will it work for repeat viewings or for international audiences without HBO is a complete mystery.
Now when it came to the books you could decide where your character went and if you suddenly found your character dead or the outcome was not to your satisfaction, you had the choice to go back and choose a different option. However Mosaic seems to lean more towards the movie playing out in just one certain direction, depending on which option was selected by a majority of audience members.
We don’t yet know what Mosaic‘s story will be about, but it is set to star Sharon Stone as well as Garrett Hedlund. There is no confirmed release date as yet either.
Do you think the world is ready to participate in the outcome of a movie? I would love to know what your thoughts are on the whole concept!
