Alright, alright, alright! The McConnaissance may have taken a slight breather after last year’s Interstellar but it’s getting right back into the swing of things in 2016 with Free State of Jone. Written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit), the upcoming historical action drama sees Matthew McConaughey take on the real-life role of Newt Knight, a Confederate turned rebellion leader in the US Civil War who not only caused controversy with his inter-racial marriage to a former slave woman, but also led Jones County to seceed from the Confederacy and declare itself a “free state”.

Or at least that’s the legend (at least for that last part), as historians are not entirely convinced events actually happened the way Knight’s relatives relayed the story. Fact or fiction though, it gives us the basis for a thrilling looking movie, and gives McConaughey the opportunity to show off both his dramatic and action hero chops at the same time.

And you can get a taste of that in the film’s first trailer which got released over the weekend. Check it out below.

Free State of Jones is an epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.

Free State of Jones also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle, Beyond the Lights ), Keri Russell (Felicity, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and Mahershala Ali (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, House of Cards). It is scheduled for release on May 13, 2016.
