One of my biggest disappointments of 2013 was Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, not just for the fact that stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton seemingly went from sleepwalking through it to being embarrassed by it, but mainly because writer/director Tommy Wirkola had held such high promise. He had of course won all that street cred not on the street, but rather in the snow. Or to be more precise, Dead Snow, Wirkola’s 2009 cult Norwegian horror comedy about Nazi zombies at a ski resort that has become a huge hit with fans. And now that he has had his taste of big budget Hollywood, Wirkola is going back to the undead reich that brought him fame in the first place, with a sequel: Dead Snow: Red vs Dead.
With the start of a new year, it’s also the start of a new film festival season, and soon one of the biggest for indie filmmakers, Sundance, will be upon us. Dead Snow: Red vs Dead will be making it’s debut at the festival, and the first teaser trailer for the film has been released in anticipation of this.
If the worst day of your life consisted of accidentally killing your girlfriend with an axe, chain-sawing your own arm off, and watching in horror as your closest friends were devoured by a zombified Nazi battalion, you’d have to assume that things couldn’t get much worse. In Martin’s case, that was only the beginning.
Picking up immediately where the original left off, Dead Snow; Red vs. Dead wastes no time getting right to the gore-filled action, leaving a bloody trail of intestines in its wake. Director Tommy Wirkola returns to the helm with a vengeance, coming up with more inventive ways to maim and dismember than you ever thought possible. Combining wry humor with horrific worst-case scenarios, this follow-up to the 2009 Midnight classic is sure to shock the weak-of-heart and delight even the most hard-core fans of the horror genre. Colonel Herzog is back, and he is not to be f**ked with.
Ooh, right in the brain! Well, based on the little shown here it certainly appears as if the sequel will live up to Wirkola’s earlier claims that the film will be “bigger, scarier, funnier, more action-filled and gorier than the previous one,” with hero Martin now building up a zombie destroying ARM-y (get it?!) to take Colonel Herzog and his undead goosestepping horde.
Dead Snow: Red vs Dead stars Vegar Hoel, Stig Frode Henriksen, Martin Starr, Ørjan Gamst, Ingrid Haas and Jocelyn DeBoer, and has not yet received a release date.
