Ant Man (9)

So you’re not the easily convinced sort, and not even a bunch of pretty positive early reactions to Ant-Man has you amped for Marvel’s latest flick. Maybe you need to stop sucking lemons see a bit more of this movie than the same few scenes that we’ve seen recycled several times for the film’s small handful of trailer thus far?

Well, that’s where this new international trailer from Japan comes in, showing off a hell of a lot of new footage including some great character beats for Paul Rudd’s titular hero Scott Lang and Michael Douglas’ original Ant-Man Hank Pym, a whole lot more size-changing action and a big – or is that small? – fight between Ant-Man and his arch-nemesis Darren Cross aka Yellowjacket, played by Corey Stoll, which at one point takes place on a cellphone!

Although there are no narrative spoilers given away here, if you prefer to go into this movie completely fresh so that you can be totally surprised by its action beats, then you may want to skip this trailer, although I have to add that this is probably the best preview we’ve seen thus far.

Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd (This is 40, They Came Together), Evangeline Lilly (“LOST,” The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies) and Michael Douglas (The Game, And So It Goes) and brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time. Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang (Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

I don’t know about you guys, but from now onwards whenever I’m talking about this movie to somebody, I will only ever be referring to it as “UHNTO-MUNN!”. Oh Japan, you never cease to entertain. Other than that little lesson in pronunciation, Marvel have also released a new featurette that focuses on Cross Technologies and their Yellowjacket suit.

And now we’re really going to get into possible SPOILER territory, so if you don’t want to know any further, particularly about the rumours surrounding one character that is central to the Ant-Man mythos, then I say good day to you sir/madam! GOOD DAY! For the rest of you, scroll down past the new character posters for the flick.

Answering a question fanboys have been asking for a while now, Marvel Studios Head Kevin Feige recently confirmed to MTV that Janet Van Dyne, aka the superhero character Wasp, will in fact be showing up in the movie. Joss Whedon originally planned to use the character in The Avengers, but his plans changed. But Janet Van Dyne will finally be getting her big-onscreen debut now.

“She factors in a number of spoiler-ish ways. But we will see Janet van Dyne in action in this film, and sort of what happened to her. And then we will understand why that is the reason that he (Hank Pym) doesn’t want his daughter to follow in those footsteps. One of the reasons why he’s always so upset about superheroes in general, dismissive of them in general and also a reason why he doesn’t want her to put on the suit.”

In the comics, Van Dyne is the partner of Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym, and actually one of the original founding members of the Avengers (she’s also unfortunately a part of Hank Pym’s most infamous storyline; one that I’m certain Marvel will be avoiding completely). With Evangeline Lilly sporting a very Wasp-ish hairdo, it was thought that her character – Hank Pym’s daughter Hope Van Dyne – was being setup to be the new Wasp. That could certainly still happen, but it looks like Janet will still have a huge role to play even though Feige says that “we only see Janet when she’s in the helmet. She’s in the outfit. So you just sort of see eyes.”

Though details are sketchy, it appears that Janet disappears in some fashion during Hank Pym’s younger days, which is actually what prompts him to hang up the costume. Based on what Feige told THR though, it would seem that she may be a victim of Pym’s technology and ends up getting stuck in another “quantum” dimension, and getting her back may be leading to bigger things for the MCU down the line.

“But the truth is, there is so much in Ant-Man: introducing a new hero, introducing a very important part of technology in the Marvel universe, the Pym particles. Ant-Man getting on the Avengers’ radar in this film and even – this is the weirdest part, you shouldn’t really talk about it because it won’t be apparent for years – but the whole notion of the quantum realm and the whole notion of going to places that are so out there, they are almost mind-bendingly hard to fathom. It all plays into Phase Three.”

What’s more, it appears that Wasp isn’t the only Avenger that will be showing up in Ant-Man!

“KEVIN FEIGE: Ant-Man is one of the best examples of how a movie can do both. It’s absolutely a stand-alone film about Hank Pym and Scott Lang, but it is within this [shared] universe.

PAUL RUDD: Essentially, this is a heist film, and if you look at the structure of heist films, there is always a test run and the test run fails. In talking about what could be a good test run, we were just playing around with conversations and thought, “Oh my God, what if he actually fought an Avenger?” We started getting really giddy about this idea. It seemed like that would be a fun way to incorporate the universe into this film.”

Ant-Man was directed by Peyton Reed, who also co-wrote the script with Rudd and Adam McKay, based on the original draft from Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish. The movie also stars Michael Pena, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, Martin Donovan, Wood Harris, John Slattery, Gregg Turkington, and Abby Ryder Fortson. It is scheduled for release locally on July 31.
