It’s been nearly fifteen years since Steven Spielberg’s Hook brought us a decidedly aged Peter Pan (played by the awesome and sadly deceased Robin Williams) in a movie that decided to shake up the original book by J.M. Barrie. Now in 2014 we have no fewer than three new productions of the story about to grace our screen and stage, talk about bandwagon Hollywood (you can see some pictures of the characters here). This one is called Pan and looks like a much darker (dare we say gritty) retelling with the now almost obligatory suffix of ‘the untold story’, something I seem to be seeing more and more these days.

However, after seeing this a few times I think it may actually deliver something fresh and enjoyable. I’ve said before I’ve never really gone wild for the story but I may have to rethink that after watching Hugh Jackman parade around as Blackbeard. This re-imagining comes from Director Joe Wright (Atonement) and certainly seems to be just that, a retelling. One where Hook is a young prince (eh?) and Peter is abducted from a very Oliver Twist looking orphanage by pirates (did I say eh yet?). Have a watch and tell me what you think.

I think it looks like a lot of fun and I am sure that Hugh Jackman is happy there are no claws, or for that matter hooks, to be seen…

Also starring in Pan are Garrett Hedlund as Hook, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily (Tinkerbell?), Amanda Seyfried as Mary. Expect to visit Neverland 17 July, 2015.

  1. With all these productions it’s a… PAN-DEMIC!

I want to get a wig made up of Jackman’s hair and wear it the next time I see Kerv.

Tiger Lily is not Tinkerbell but an Indian Princess. She never said anything in the movies so that is probably why you don’t remember her.

I have to admit, the racebending in this movie irks me a little. Tiger Lily is one of the few non-white Disney female characters. There was no reason she had to be cast like this.
