You know I really enjoyed Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity. Yes the found footage genre has been around a while and was launched into the mainstream stratosphere by the cult classic The Blair Witch Project, a movie that scared the hell out of me until I watched it a second time… So Peli’s latest movie Area 51 (which has been sitting on some shelf for a while now, apparently some six years to be exact) has me intrigued. He’s moved away from the paranormal and into the science fiction which is either going to work, or crash harder than the aliens did in Roswell back in 1947. This time the found footage follows some kids who break into Area 51 to snoop about. Apparently one of them was abducted and feels ‘drawn’ back so that’s sure to end well. That’s the thing about Peli’s movies, they NEVER end well and even with that in the audience’s mind he pulls in mega bucks on a tight budget. Have a watch and see what you think. Keen? Or bored to death of kids getting in over their heads?

Looks… Predictable hey? Still plenty of people love these movies. Whether you will be able to see it at the cinema is a different story as it’s only being shown over a weekend at Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas with a straight to VOD on the day of release which is 15 may.

I have been an avid fan of movies ever since I discovered Santa Clause wasn't real, a day marked in my memory by my first viewing of It's a Wonderful Life, which wasn't so wonderful that day. Since then I've watched thousands of movies and even fooled my parents into putting me through uni to get a degree in the subject. I first started writing as a journalist for The South African Newspaper before moving onto communications for an NGO trying to save the planet. Unfortunately my recommendations to the CEO that we should all don rings imbued with the powers of earth, fire, wind, water and HEART went unheard. Now I pretend the end isn't nigh by hiding in movies.
