I do love biopics, from movies like the recent The meaning of Everything, which garnered the lead actor an Oscar, to the brilliant Ray, I enjoy seeing what it takes to make remarkable people. So when I heard that there was a story about the Beach Boys, a group I have always thought could have taken on the Beatles, I was delighted. I am also more than a little curious to see how the movie comes across as, unlike many other biopics that cover a very large time span, this will cover just two important moments in the history of the band’s founding member Brian Wilson.
Starring the very talented John Cusack as Wilson we get an insight into what happened during the years the band’s lead suffered numerous mental breakdowns and what eventually led to his return. I think Cusack is a brilliant choice as the older Wilson – I’ve always thought him a brilliant yet underutilized actor. Playing the younger Wilson is Paul Dano whose performance in Prisoners blew me away. Along with Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) as the love interest that empowered Wilson to leave his controlling manager and return we have a very solid cast for a film that I am sure will pull on the heart strings as much as the musical. Just have a watch of this trailer and tell me you don’t have that damn song now stuck in your head!
Love & Mercy also stars Jake Abel (Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightening Thief) and will swim ashore 5 June.
