A certain homegrown hero turned 95 yesterday, and while the majority of his family is busy tearing away at his legacy faster than a politician in a PR blitz, at least the majority of the nation could stand solid for 67 minutes yesterday as a sign of solidarity.
Earlier this week we saw a teaser trailer for the upcoming Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom that was beautiful, simple and spine-tingling. But for the full trailer, we’ve got a lot more anger, action and love on our hands instead.
Based on South African President Nelson Mandela’s autobiography of the same name, which chronicles his early life, coming of age, education and 27 years in prison before becoming President and working to rebuild the country’s once segregated society.
There’s no denying that our shared history is an ugly one, and not seeing that captured here would be a gross disservice to everyone involved in that period of time. Long Walk to Freedom is looking pretty slick so far though. Idris Elba is doing a great job capturing the spirit of the former president and the humanity that came to be his most defining characteristic, with the obligatory romance thrown in for good heart-pounding measure with Naomi Harris as a
necklacing child murdering fraudster Winnie Madizekela.
The film is out next year January, and also stars Tony Kgoroge, Riaad Moosa, Zolani Mkiva, Jamie Bartlett, Lindiwe Matshikiza, Deon Lotz and Terry Pheto. Justin Chadwick directs
