The Cash Dollar!

What’s a tournament of this scale without a fat purse of cash? Nothing I say! Here’s what the teams above will be competing for:

  • World Champion – $1,000,000 USD
  • 2nd place – $250,000 USD
  • 3rd / 4th place – $150,000 USD
  • 5th – 8th place – $75,000 USD
  • 9th – 12th place – $45,000 USD
  • 13th – 16th place – $25,000 USD

What I like about this cash split is that everybody wins some sort of money – even those who place last. $25,000 is hardly small change!

I do feel that Riot should maybe follow the same model that Valve have with their International event for Dota 2 though. Rope the players in, and let them help grow the prize pool in exchange for some cool in-game loot. $1,000,000 is still a fantastic prize, don’t get me wrong, but it could honestly be a much bigger number.

OMG ALL THE TEAMS

Honestly, used to play LoL, enjoyed it, tried to get into Dota 2, which only made me angry at why everything was so different, but once Dota hooked its claws in, haven’t gone back to LoL. Personally, Valve just does their Tournaments far better. The interaction with the compendium is what drew me in , and LoL needs to follow suit…Also…Only 1 mil from Riot!? Those guys are drowning in the cash, you’d think they could offer alittle more…

I had the privilege of attending the semi finals and finals of the 2014 world championship last year in South Korea. It blew my mind! 😀 If you are a fan of online gaming, then you should definitely attend a live international game. I may stand under correction, but I am fairly certain the 2014 LoL World champs was the biggest E-sports event to date. I hope the 2015 event in EU will be even bigger. It has all the grandeur of watching rugby or some other physical sport live, but instead of men touching each other inappropriately to get to a ball, you’re watching the same game you love playing at home, just on a professional level. It was such a rush being a spectator in the stands! I came in supporting Samsung White with a whole lot of S. White fanboy flags and signs (I follow S. Korean local OnGameNet pro circuit online). I got along really well with the locals in the crowd around me during the 3 days I attended. There’s something magical about high fiving a random Korean stranger in the crowd when your team scores a crazy kill. I feel that the prize money is probably sufficient. I don’t really want E-sports to become retarded like football contracts. If your prize money is enough to feed a small African country for a year just for the sake of “Hey, look at how big my competition (AKA my PENIS) is!”, then it’s a waste of time. Also bear in mind that the players earn a shit house of cash from sponsors (per game payout and then sweet incentive bonuses when they get further in competitions) as well as their streams. League of Legends has a bigger player base and larger view count for major events than anything else out there at present, they don’t need big $$$ numbers at World Champs: the players at World’s want to be there for the love of the game. This despite the temptation to “sellout” to Dota2 for instance. It’s how it should be. Nothing wrong with Dota 2 players playing the game they love. Just two different models. That said, RIOT could definitely learn a thing or two from Valve. Something like a Compendium would boost viewership something crazy and promote the game further. RIOT has a more money than I can count and that does make me jelly. You should also Google the new RIOT HQ. Wow. Salty flavoured jelly.
