Rare captures and gym training will be made easier in a future Pokemon GO update

I’ve long since stopped playing Pokémon GO. I know I’ll be back though (even if just for short spurts at a time) the moment Niantic Labs releases a cool new feature or two.

And they just so happen to have some goodies in the pipeline, which means I’ll be draining my battery at the speed of light soon enough. First up, catching rare Pokémon is going to be somewhat easier in future:

We are adding a new feature which grants a catch bonus when you earn medals based on catching certain types of Pokémon (Kindler, Psychic, Gardener, etc.). These new bonuses will give you a better chance of capturing Pokémon with a related type. For example, as you reach a higher tier for the Kindler Medal, your bonus to catch Fire-type Pokémon such as Charmander, Vulpix and Ponyta increases.

Trainers can work their way to a new tier by catching many Pokémon of the same type. If a Pokémon has multiple types, your bonus will be the average of your bonuses for each type. For example, Pidgey is both Normal and Flying type. Your bonus in this case would be the average of your Normal-type and Flying-type bonuses.

Well, I’ve caught around a million Zubats or so, so I’m sure I’ll see a steep increase in my nearby flying and poison Pokémon whenever this update decides to drop. Maybe I’ll get lucky and see a Muk or Weezing popup, or better yet, a Charizard or Dragonite.

The next upcoming feature is perfect for people who’ve only just jumped into Pokémon GO. It’ll make gym training a whole lot easier:

As we continue to make improvements to Pokémon GO, we have made an enhancement to the Gym experience for Trainers of all levels. In an upcoming version of Pokémon GO, when training at a friendly Gym, Trainers will be able to bring six Pokémon to battle instead of one. In addition, the CP of the Pokémon you are training against may be temporarily adjusted lower during your training session to generally match your Pokémon’s battle capabilities.

No matter what your level, you can now have an impact on your team’s Gym. Walk with your Buddy Pokémon to that nearby landmark and show your Team Leader that you can battle with the best!

That’s a great update I reckon, but it does mean that gyms in general are going to be a whole lot stronger. When I played Pokémon GO back in the day, taking one under the protection of five or more Pokémon for example was very time consuming. That sort of instance was rare however. Now that everybody, regardless of level, can ramp up a gym’s level, I’m sure we’re going to see a whole lot more of them that have a load of Pokémon to work through if you’re from an opposing faction.

Still, this change, along with the planned catch bonus, are nice improvements to Pokémon GO I reckon. I’m sure we will see both implemented soon enough.

This game dropped how long ago? And already there is reference to it being played “back in the day”.

A long long time ago. In a galaxy far away. Naboo was under an attack.

Aaaaah great. Now I’ve got that Weird Al song in my head.
