It’s been a damned good year for gaming, even if the rest pf 2016 hasn’t exactly left many people happy. We’ve been treated to gems like the perpetually popular Overwatch, Nathan Drake’s swansong in Uncharted and damned good shooters like Doom and Titanfall 2. And so, so much more. Soon it’ll be time to recognise them as just about every publication on planet earth has some sort of Game of the Year award. Yes, we’ll soon have our own – but the most official of them all are just called the…Game Awards.

The show will be broadcast on December 1 2016 on just about every streaming service the internet has to offer – but it’ll be on at 4 in the morning here in SA, so we’ll just catch up later.

Here though, are the categories and nominees, and how it was all decided.

“Nominees and winners for most categories of The Game Awards are selected by 29 global media and influencer outlets. These publications submit ballots in a nomination and winner round, based on the collective and diverse feedback of their staff. Fan voting determines winners in select categories.”

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
