720p vs 1080p is a “PR differentiation” say Witcher devs

The PlayStation 4 version of The Witcher 3 may or may not look and run better than the Xbox One version. the same could really be said of any game coming for the new consoles, so that’s not really interesting. According to the Witcher 3 developer CD Projekt RED, it doesn’t rally matter anyway.

"We are still working on squeezing the juice out of the consoles and Microsoft are supporting us in this respect," CD Projekt’s Marcus Iwinski told Eurogamer. "The final effect, whether it’s 720p, 1080p – we had the debate in the studio about it and actually asked our tech guys to explain how it works, and they sent me some complicated graphs that ‘if I have this size of the screen, and I sit one meter or two meters from it, then I might be able to see the difference’.

"It’s more of a PR differentiation," he added, "which is very important for Sony right now – and they are using it, obviously – than something that is really meaningful to gamers.

"We’re definitely working to max out each of the platforms in terms of what we can get, because that’s a crucial element of The Witcher. Will there be big differences? Really I don’t think so. It’s too early to say. If there will be, they will be tiny. It will be more like people talking ‘hey, I have this and you have that and this is better’.

As much as I actually agree, I find this very hard to believe coming from the guys whose last game, the Witcher 2, was at the time one of the benchmarks for melting PC graphic cards with its ludicrous ubersampling.

For the most part, resolution isn’t nearly as important as frame-rate, and half the time people don;t realise that they’re looking at upscaled 720p as opposed to 1080p, but you’ll sure as hell notice if your game feels like it’s a slideshow.

The Witcher 3 has been delayed to 2015 to give it extra polish, and will probably melt graphics cards anew upon its release in February next year.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
