Assassin’s Creed 4 won’t ignore Desmond

Though it really should. I’m one of the many who felt terribly let down by Assassin’s Creed 3, with its 5 game, 5 year story arc essentially culminating in pointlessness. thankfully, Desmond’s role in Assassin’s creed has come to an end – but that doesn’t mean Ubisoft has forgotten about the monkey-faced hero.

“Desmond has been the main protagonist of the franchise so far. This won’t be the case in [Black Flag],” creative director Jean Guesdon confirmed in the game’s Factsheet Q&A.

“That being said [Black Flag] is not a reboot, neither is it a spinoff and we’re continuing to develop a consistent mythology. So yes, Desmond will be referred to as a very important legacy of the AC universe.”

Instead of playing as current-time protagonist, it seems you’ll be playing as a random thrill seeker,

“Abstergo Entertainment is a subset of the Abstergo conglomerate. It’s a division specialised in Entertainment providing historical content for games or movies. Abstergo Entertainment has worked closely with Ubisoft to deliver Assassin’s Creed Liberation [and the] the Multiplayer of Assassin’s Creed III,” he said, with Ubisoft nicely blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.

“Abstergo Entertainment is ACIVBF present playground and players will be immersed like never before in the AC universe. They will become part of the AC universe, able to meet some already known protagonists of the AC franchise.”

Honestly, when I played Assassin’s Creed 3’s naval missions, I thought the whole engine would be perfect for a pirate themed game, which we’re now getting. I just wish it would come without all of Assassin’s Creeds baggage. The series best bits are all contained within the past – and the regular jumps to the present (or indeed, the future) have, in my opinion, ended up diluting the entire experience. how are you supposed to become immersed when you know that you’re a guy, playing as another guy, playing as a another guy?

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is headed to just about everything capable of playing video games towards the end of this year – and will be available on next-gen consoles as well.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
