What happens to game developers when they’re no longer a part of big name publishers? Well, Bobby Kotick usually gets his shotgun and does the merciful thing, putting them out of their misery, but in reality, they all escape and form their own studio. A bunch of ex-Monolith guys have done just that, with their debut game being the monochromatic Betrayer.
Now known as Blackpowder Games, the studio has shown off Betrayer, a PC exclusive first-person action adventure game. It’s 1604, you’re fresh off the boat from ye olde England and instead of helping to build a new colony, you’ happen to be staring down some nightmare fuel that is plaguing the land of Virginia.
All the colour from the land has vanished, along with the previous settlers and native tribes of that land, save for a mysterious lady in red. Also, a bunch of bloodthirsty conquistadors want your head on a pike before you uncover the truth of what really happened here.
Here’s a few key features, stolen directly from the Blackpowder website:
- Key Features
- Chart your own course through an untamed wilderness teeming with danger and discovery.
- Unravel the colony’s many mysteries by gathering clues and awakening the memories of the dreaming dead.
- Build up an arsenal of early 17th century weaponry including muskets, bows, crossbows, and throwing axes.
- Collect untold treasures hidden in the wilds by the colonists for reasons you will come to understand in time.
Looks like a decent game. Betrayer is out next week August 14 on Steam Early Access. Better stock up on those tomahawks.

The colour scheme will help in creating an eerie feel.

Sounds interesting. Hope they include a little more grey though, some of those screenshots aren’t very clear.
