World of Warcaft, while being the most successful MMORPG, has always had a love-hate relationship with esports. The only esport-esque side of World of Warcraft has for the longest of times been their player-vs-player which changes with every single expansion. It’s a near impossible balancing act with each patch and update, and keeping the playing field level has always been a daunting task for Blizzard which amasses criticism from the competitive world.
That’s all changing with the introduction of the Mythic Dungeon Invitational, a PvE esport where two teams race against each other in one of 12 dungeons to see who can do it the fastest. Mythic Dungeons have always served one purpose – getting gear – but that’s changed with World of Wacraft: Legion. Normal Mythic dungeons are quite easy, and that’s why Blizzard introduced the Mythic+ system where dungeons can now go as high as level 24 with extra affixes making the dungeons harder than their normal form. Affixes start at level 4, level 7, and level 10 – with 10 having 3 affixes. Examples of these affixes include bolstering, meaning when you kill an enemy those within close range get buffed. Sanguine leaves a massive pool of blood on the floor when an enemy dies and this heals enemies on it and damages players who stand on it. As the dungeon gets higher the mobs and bosses get health and damage increases based on the dungeon level. The “big boy” affixes are Tyrannical, which makes bosses deal way more damage, and Fortified which makes mobs do way more damage. It’s a whole lot of fun.
The addition of Mythic+ birthed the idea of the Mythic Dungeon Invitational where teams from around the world competed head-to-head to from different regions. It all came to a close this past weekend with the finals of the competition, and all eyes were on Europe as they have, in the past, given us some of the best PvE WoW players in the world. Raider.io, who offer the incredible website for tracking Mythic+, were clear favourites as they the team, name after the website, held all the records for highest levels done. The action was surprisingly exciting with victories coming down to mere seconds between teams. They essentially race against each other, but they’re also racing against the clock and each death of player adds 5 seconds to their clock. Raider.io lost out to Free Marsy, a team from Australia. On the other end of the bracket team Honestly beat out their opponents to make an all Australian grand final, something not a lot of people expected. The final came down to the 5th map, with Arcway being the decider. Free Marsy snuck in a win on game four with 4 seconds left and came back from a 2-1 deficit to take the grand finals 3-2.
The Mythic Dungeon Invitational was an exciting addition to competitive World of Warcraft, and is a strong contender to PvP as the new stable competitive mode for World of Warcraft. PvP will still be a big showcase for World of Warcraft, but they better watch out.
