Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is now out, and it has been rather well received, bar the annoying lag and an annoying multiplayer exploit. You’d think the atrocity that was Ghosts would’ve chased away many of the core fans, yet Advanced Warfare is still selling strongly. There are clearly some forgiving people out there, because the franchise has recently been named the best ever video game series, at least according to Guinness World Records and one of their online polls.
Craig Glenday, the Editor in-Chief of Guinness World Records, says that they conducted a poll to find out what gamers really enjoyed (Hexus via The Independent).
“More than 5,000 fans of the book from 140 countries across the world took to an online poll to vote for their favourite games, and the top 50 record-breaking games were featured in the book.”
Here are the top 10 as voted for by these gamers:
1. Call of Duty
2. Super Mario Bros.
3. Minecraft
4. Grand Theft Auto
5. Halo
6. The Legend of Zelda
7. FIFA
8. Assassin’s Creed
9. Battlefield
10. The Elder Scrolls
As much hate as people give the Call of Duty series, I’m unsurprised to see it right on top. Activision ship millions of the titles, regardless of how excellent, average, or poor they are. Nintendo’s eternal mascot is second, with the block-stacking Minecraft coming in at third. Considering that there are millions of gamers worldwide, I hardly think that a sample of 5000 voters is valid.
These and others will go into the 2015 version of the Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition. I have the one from back in 2008, and I am holding it in my hands right now (between typing, obviously). I flicked through it just to get a feel for how things have changed over the past few years. Know what the best selling first person shooter franchise was in 2007/8? Medal of Honor, a series that has fallen off the face of the earth. The best selling PlayStation 3 title at the time was Resistance: Fall of Man, while the best Xbox 360 title was Halo 3. Interestingly enough, these are shooters too.
The remaining top 40 is as follows:
11. Pokémon
12. Angry Birds
13. Final Fantasy
14. Need for Speed
15. Mario Kart
16. League of Legends
17. Borderlands
18. Metal Gear
19. Sonic the Hedgehog
20. Counter-Strike
21. Kingdom Hearts
22. The Last of Us
23. World of Warcraft
24. The Witcher
25. Pro Evolution Soccer
26. God of War
27. Far Cry
28. Bioshock
29. Resident Evil
30. Uncharted
31. Fallout
32. Batman: Arkham
33. DotA
34. Gears of War
35. Mass Effect
36. Half-Life
37. PAC-Man
38. Portal
39. Super Smash Bros.
40. Saints Row
41. WWE
42. LittleBigPlanet
43. Crash Bandicoot
44. LEGO
45. Mortal Kombat
46. Red Dead Redemption
47. World of Tanks
48. Gran Turismo
49. NBA 2K
50. Just Dance
To my surprise, my beloved Dota is all the way down at 33, while League of Legends is at 16. That in itself has me doubting the validity of this record. I honestly think that LoL at least should be in the top 10 as it is insanely popular. Anyways, that’s just my two cents. Are there any results that don’t sit right with you? Does this list look accurate? Or rather, does it annoy you that Call of Duty is still THAT popular? Leave your thoughts below.
Personally I feel that a much larger sample should be taken before establishing a “record” like this. To put it into perspective, this poll effectively took 36 people from each country and asked their opinion. 36 is the number of tomatoes in a bottle of All Gold, not a great sample number from each country.

That game looks awesome! Will definitely get it during the Christmas sale! I made a terrible mistake in ME3 last night and one of my favourite characters commited suicide. FML. My gf walked and was like: ‘What’s wrong with you?’ So I replied: ‘Huh what nothing, just this hay fever, makes my eyes all watery.’ Will be playing that whole part again today, it can’t end like that.

Diablo not even on the list. I mean come on! Maybe the people they asked aren’t old enough to have played D2… Still D3 is pretty awesome now and as a series it should definitely be on the list

with lists made from 5000 people, its about how many people named CoD in their top 10. it would take no consideration of where it was placed on their lists, only that it was there.
in terms of the frequency of CoD being mentioned in a top 10, i think it was pretty predictable that it would be #1
more surprised that the Legend of Zelda made it to the top 10.

You mean, because it’s too good of a series to possibly be listed amongst such trash in a bogus list such as this, right?
Matthew Holliday
November 13, 2014 at 09:27
Ugh… no…
Its just not as mainstream as others that come to mind.
top 10 lists generally pick up mainstream, rather than cult classics like zelda…
stop being so cynical.

What about RPG? I understood that is very popular

Showing your work, an extra mark!
So, let me see, spelt your name right, showed the work, chewed the pencil correctly.
120%, well done.
I wish I was kidding, that is a possible, theoretical mark at some high schools (ok, may be 110%, which they round down to the nearest 100). Or at least was about 2 years ago

5000 people is not nearly enough people to ask. And it was most likely that most of that 5000 people were American. Now you should never ask American people anything. What made it to the top of the list? GUNS.
The Witcher is on the list at number 24.

That was best Mp in 2012, not best game.
Best game was Borderlands 2.
No best shooter for 2013 (cos ghost was crap, bf 4 was broken) and dota 2 grabbed best Mp.

It’s nice to see CoD on top but in all honesty I think there are games that should have been higher up in the ranking. Look at #12 Angry Birds? WTF? They should have taken a bigger sample.

I must admit, up to Black Ops II I really loved the series. then it got crap IMO.
but I also see Red Dead Redemption still on the list. I have replayed it numerous times, and I hoped the developer would expand on the series, but that is fairly impossible since they killed John Marston! *sigh*
